Reissued Stanley Clarke Brown Bass
« on: September 24, 2002, 01:36:01 PM »
This is a general enquiry (But I'm sure Mica will have the answer).

I am a whisker away from owning one of the above mentioned beauties.

On the reissued brown bass the pick up selector is still on the front horn but appears to have been more sympathetically placed (for slappers).

Is this correct or just an optical illusion between two pictures ?

Thanks in advance.

I vote for optical illusion. We didn't mean to put it in a different position, so the Brown Basses  should be very similar to the old way. I think maybe it's the direction of the knob... we tend to point them away from the strings these days (hurts less that way).

I'll also remind you that Stanley has played with that switch in the way for years. He's joked before that his wild circular right hand technique was developed to avoid the switch.

Your inquiry brings up another interesting topic: pickup position. You'll probably notice the Brown Bass has the neck pickup very near to the end of the fingerboard. Over the years, we've moved the neck pickup away to give more room to slap players. But the closer that pickup is to the end of the fingerboard, the bassier the tone. Mark King and Stanley Clarke both play with little room there to emphsize the sound. I guess their precise techniques allow them to play in the limited space available.

Hi Mica

Thank you for the information. aren't photos difficult to interpret? Needless to say I can't wait until the Brown Bass arrives. I'll have to try and perfect the Stanley whirl ...... some chance !! I'll let you know when the bass arrives.

Hi Mica

Looks like I'll have to be careful. From the picture the pointy end of the knob points toward the strings !! Is it an easy DIY job to turn it the other way ?

Sure - just loosen both the set screws and turn it right around and tighten the screws again. There is a set of adjustment keys included with each new bass, so you should be just fine.

Hi Mica

Thank you for your help.
I should be taking delivery of the bass on Monday.
So that really is something to look forward to.
Have a great weekend.
