Author Topic: Ebony/Mahogany neck on Signature (Read 325 times)

Can anyone refer me to recordings, etc. where I could hear the combination of Ebony neck laminates with a mahogany neck? I like the round sound mahogany produces, but also am interested in the super sustain I've heard from ebony. I know the charge for adding ebony laminates, but is there an extra charge for substituting mahogany for maple in the neck?
My dream would be to put these together on a 3/4 omega body with Signature or Anniversary electronics with either flame walnut or non-orange coco bolo for the body wood (I think less orange would argue less with the brown mahog.).
One more question: Does anyone know if the electronics on the Brown Basses that have sold recently are Signature or something else? I notice they have a PU selector, which seems not to be Signature. Anniversary maybe?

I forgot to mention, the bass will be medium scale. I struggled with long scales for years before I got my Spoiler med scale. I've been in heaven ever since!

No charge for changing over to Mahogany as the main neck wood on most models. I don't know of any recording made with this combination of woods, and I think the only bass we've made so far out of these woods was Yahya's Big Bass. This was an extra long scale.

Brown Basses are 20th Anniversary electronics.

Generally the Ebony takes over the sound. We are making a custom 32 neck through with a Mahogany and Ebony neck, so when it's finished we can share what we find. You can follow it's progress in the Factory to Customer section, but we're just starting it and trying to decide if the top might wind up Ebony too.

I will look forward to hearing what the ebony/mahogany 32 neck sounds like when it's finished. If it combines really massive sustain with the warmth from the mahogany, I'm sold.

What's the cost to upgrade from Signature electronics to Anniversary? What are the differences in sound and electronic components with the upgrade? I think what I'm asking is, Is the anniversary package different from a stereo version of the Signature package with PU-specific volumes substituted for the master volume and pan, and with the pan function replaced with a PU selector? I would prefer the greater control two volumes gives in any event. But if the sound is substantially different, I'll play the anniversary and compare before I decide.

Finally, by the descriptions I've heard about the sound of FatBoy PUs, I think I may want to include them on the bass I order. How much would the upgrade from AXYs cost on a Signature?

I won't be ready to talk about ordering until after the new year. I've been restraining myself from peppering you and the others on the board with questions till now. It finally got the better of me.

Bill, if you get the chance, series electronics are off the hook! Words alone don't begin to describe the sounds. Magic would be a start. The neck woods you've described are an excellant choice. Enjoy.

Yahya - I had a long conversation with Mica the other day and decided I may go with maple/purpleheart laminates. I'm still interested in your bass, though (having come back to look at it a lot of times). What does your neck sound like?

I'd love to go all the way to series electronics on this bass but finances would force me to put the S2's into a fundamentally stripped instrument if I did. There are some customizations I want to do the the peghead and likely the body shape, plus other things to make it my own. I'd really miss these things now that I'm finally ready to build a custom bass.

Based on Mica's and my conversation, I'm leaning heavily toward Anniversary electronics and FatBoys. I'm seriously thinking about springing the extra bucks to do the extra shielding and body work to allow me to add S2 electronics later.

Thanks for the info. I'm really having fun planning and appreciate all the input other members can offer.

Bill;

The Big Bass was made using the neck woods of The Brown Bass as a starting point. The sound is sweet, full, deep, warm; and will cause the walls to quake at low volume. The ebony makes it's presence known. It has it's own voice. I think solid body construction is a factor. Have fun. Take your time. It will all come togeather.

Thanks. I really want to create the bass that best expresses how I've always heard the music in my head. Not to mention creating a look that's uniquely mine.
