So I did it. About two weeks ago I ordered a custom further with a birds-eye top and back and a cheshire cat inlay below the bridge.
I am stoked and can hardly wait.
I just had to tell someone.

The next question is what to run it through. I have one of the first Two Rock Custom Reverb's and a Polytone at home, but now have a desire to get a Boogie combo, as Alembic and Boogie seem like the equivalent of milk and cookies in my mind.
Anyone have any experience with any rigs they particularly loved?

Charley, welcome to the club and congratulations on your Further. I have to admit to being a little bias in this regard. You can see my Further coming along quite nicely in the Factory to Customer section under Bill's Custom Further. I currently play an '83 Electrum (among other guitars) through a Boogie Mark III Simul-class with a Thiele bottom. I use an Alembic SF-2 and a BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. I love the Boogie. I bought it new in about '86 and have played it ever since. The SF-2 is truly an amazing piece of equipment. Do a search of this site for SF-2 and you'll find reams of testimonials to the super filter. I recently added the BBE and am quite impressed.

Congratulations Charley and welcome. I have joined you in ordering a Further as well. Mine will have a macassar ebony top and an inlay to be designed in collaboration with Susan. A few other custom touches will be a part of the project, too.

As far as your amplifier - my FIRST choice would be a Custom Reverb. If I wasn't saving like a fiend to purchase the Further, I would have seriously considered picking up a Two Rock. I think Krinard and Mloganoski are producing some of the best sounding stuff available. Having said that, I'm waiting on a Mesa Lonestar that I ordered a while ago (no fancy custom case or anything, I just don't care for the blue and silver that everyone stocks so I ordered one in black). I took my Skylark over to GC for a couple of hours and played through a Lonestar and Lonestar Special. I was very impressed with the tone of both, but the classic Lonestar with it's 6L6 valves (also will accommodate 6V6s in the 50 watt mode) was the one for me. I've also played through a friend's TR Topaz driving some Tone Tubbys - the Alembic sounded glorious. I don't think you can go wrong with your Custom Reverb, but if you're set on a Mesa, hey, I'll trade you the Lonestar for the TR.

Charley, everyone in my band plays through Mesa-Boogie's, one guitar player plays a Martin D-35 through a Boogie Mark III which blew everyone at Mesa-Boogie away, they had never heard of anyone playing a Martin through a Boogie, my lead guitar plays a Mesa-Boogie Mark IV and has an Alembic Exploiter, the Mark IV rocks, and I use a M-B 400+ with my Series 1 and Epic, I've said before and I'll say it again

Mesa-Boogie is the Alembic of amp's

I'm patiently awaiting mine to be started. In the meantime, I just picked up a Lonestar classic that should arrive in a few days.

I feel like I'm building a new bedroom for a new baby...!

My Further is in line awaiting its turn for inlay art. This will still take a little while and the folks at Alembic are VERY busy for the next week and a half, or so. I hoping to have it in time for a gig we're playing November 5th. Enjoy your Boogie - the Alembic of amps IMHO.

Hey Justin,
I know what you mean about a new bedroom for a new baby. I'm doing the same thing. I am getting rid of a bunch of stuff while moving, and scaling down my rig as I am no longer a full time musician.
I'm getting a Boogie Mark 1 reissue and a TC Electronics G-System for effects. These will replace my Two Rock Custom Reverb and large, heavy pedal board. I'm not stoked about getting rid of the Two Rock, but am no longer playing out much, am getting readyt to move, and just don't want to lug a head, cab and pedalboard around with me everywhere.
A guitar, 1x12 combo, and compact multi effects unit sounds a lot more portable to me

Ah Charley,

You're growing up! LOL! When young, I think we all think bigger is better: nothing's more impressive than a huge guitar rig, right? Then we get older, and the back and knees start to hurt and we get tired of lugging all that crap around. When we come to our senses, portable and simple wins out over the Marshall Stack syndrome.

PS, Assuming you don't already have a buyer, and that you've already considered EBAY, you might also wanna try the Two-Rock website's owners forum...after they berate you for daring to sell your amp, they'll probably give you top dollar for it, LOL!
