I was thinking about the following combination for laminates on a Darling guitar. The wood to the
center is maple purpleheart maple ebony maple-veneer vermillion.

I haven't seen wide laminate as far out as the purpleheart I have here. Is there any reason putting them there would be a bad idea?

The reason the outside pair is wide is so that it doesn't vanish before it gets to the peghead.

Would having the sections taper so the relative sizes stayed the same for the finished neck be possible?

I didn't even think of that. I was wondering about neck stability if so little of the neck was maple.

Tapered laminates are possible, it will just cost extra. The taper needs to continue to the end of the guitar (omega, smooth or point) or it will look strange.

We've made necks with no Maple at all that are stable. With 11 laminates like you've illustrated, the strength is engineered into the beam of the neck.

Without tapering the neck laminates, note that the illustration you made would have some Purpleheart on the tip of the omega carving like this one:

Actually, I think the Purpleheart on the omega tip looks pretty cool.

I think it looks cool too. It's just not something that everyone thinks about, and it's better not to be surprised in case it wouldn't be a pleasant one.
