Heh. Here I have a couple of sketches of Rami's idea for an Alembic version of Gibsons EDS-1275, based on the Tribute body shape. Guitar:

OMFG!!! I have been craving a doubleneck lately. I don't think I've seen one that could touch this. Just knowing what the sticker price would be...another dream dead.

Unlike the tribute however, I'd make it with a solid body (unchambered). Also, the headstocks would be Alembic Crowns with the 12 string having the same spacing as the 6, so it would appear twice the length. Damn! What a cool guitar this would be!!!!

P.S. I recently tried an EDS-1275. What struck me most about it was it's INCREDIBLE sustain and resonance - with all that body mass. I can't put it down anymore. It really sounds great - gotta give respect where it's due.

Oh yeah, the tailpieces, would be the Alembic bird and I'd move them as far back on the body as possible to maximize the string tension.

Haha, that thing looks too cool! Would it really be 30 scale like a bass/baritone? Is that what the baryton name refers to? If I could redisign my doubleneck, I would make the fretless bass be 30 scale and the baritone a bit shorter.

Yesterday I had a fleeting realization that maybe someday I actually could get a custom if I start putting away money - scary yet tantalizing thought!

I think at this point that it would have the same scale length as the Tribute guitar. I like the sweet shimmering sound of a 12 string. Also, the inherent neck-dive of a doubleneck makes it quite a handful to play while standing, so I think that going to baritone scale or Bass wouldn't be practical. As much as I LOVE the look and potential of a doubleneck Bass, It's looking less and less practical and more an exercise in guitar/Bass art.
I'll just keep dreaming... for now.

Rami, I don't remember hearing you talk about guitars before. Are you also a guitarist? Have an incredible collection of guitars as well as basses?

Hey Rich,

No, I'm definitely no guitarist. I must admit to being intrigued by them lately though. And I've started teaching myself a bit. After learning J.S. Bach for Bass, I've tried some of those pieces on a guitar and I just love the sound. I get funny looks from guitarists who hear me play that. Playing Bass has given me a greater appreciation for other instruments as well.
I'm trying (and hoping) NOT to become a crazy guitar collector. An Alembic doubleneck should satisfy any and all guitar urges nicely.....

Starting to collect guitars would definitely open the floodgates! That's part of the reason that I made a conscious decision a few years ago to NOT play guitar and focus on bass-style instruments - which allows for baritones of course! (I'm not going to mention keyboards...)

I think it's important to explore different instruments. It makes you more rounded as a musician and gives you more perspective. Here in Canada, we have an arts channel called BRAVO. They have a program I really enjoy where they showcase soloists who play multiple instruments. These are accomplished professional top notch musicians who are nothing short of incredible.
