Stanley Clarke live at Yoshi's April 2014
« on: April 05, 2014, 09:52:43 AM »
I got to see Stan the Man last night - he is playing with a couple of brilliant young musicians, 18 year old Beka Gochiashvili from Georgia on piano and 19 year old Texan Michael Mitchell on drums. So much energy! And as young and brash as their playing was, it was also just really astounding how much natural musicianship was overflowing on the stage.  Most of the show was played on upright, but he did a segment on the middle with his (tenor tuned?) Alembic. I went up and took a photo after the show, badly lit but you can see it's not the bass he used last year:

Someone else went up with me and asked, "what is that thing on his pedalboard?"

It looks like some kind of preamp/switcher. The crazy thing is, in between two of the footswitches it reads "Stanley Clarke"!!! Anyone know what it is?

Cool - thanks for the info & link! Looks like you can get something similar though. Wonder if he uses it just for his electric? Maybe so - when he was playing his upright he would sometimes adjust something on a table/stand to his right. When he played his electric it was pretty LOUD - it was great actually!

Speaking of his upright, during some of the quiet passages there was some awful buzzing coming through the PA. I was surprised that the soundman didn't deal with it. I asked the sound guy about it as we were leaving (not sure if it was Stanley's guy or Yoshi's) and he said Stanley had his cell phone in his pocket!

Hah!  Cell phone in the pocket; maybe he was expecting a call and didn't want to miss it.

When I saw him play an acoustic gig at NC State he had a Fishman preamp on the table that he would adjust throughout the show.

Pierre-Yves, do you like it? Do you use it for distortion?

Keith - thanks - I think something was blocking my view of the table, and didn't think to look at the end. Plus, I'm more interested in the Alembic stuff anyway!!!

I'm going again tonight!

I believe it was a Micro Bass II used for the Double Bass
