Hi,
Could you tell me any history you have, especially wood type used for the gorgeous top laminate and if the inlays are custom--the ovals are a dark grey, never seen like these on other Alembics?

Dark grey ovals, that sounds like the ones on my 88 Spoiler. If they are, then I hate to disappoint you but they are probably perloid - as in synthetic (avoiding the p-word here) ...

Thanks, I kind of thought so, the material reminded me of the Epiphone Les Pauls...always thought they never looked right due their inlays when compared to the Gibsons.

Hi Tom,

Here's what was in the file for your Spoiler:

84S3344 SMB4

top: Vermilion
body: Mahogany
neck: Maple
fingerboard: Ebony with Pearloid ovals
originally made for: not recorded
birthday: October 16, 1984

Haven't heard a peep from the bass since the day it was made.

Adriaan is right about the pearloid plastic inlay material. It was not color stable and faded over time, sometimes almost to clear. So yours is more clear than it used to be, and you are probably seeing the black of the fingerboard tinting the oval grey.

If it ever needs refretting, you can order the ovals changed to mother of pearl or abalone while it's here.

I was going to ask about getting the ovals changed at the factory--glad to know that is an option.
