Hi Chuck,

Here's what I found in the file for 90H5977:

Elan HLB+4

top: Quilted Maple
body: Maple
neck: Maple, 34 long scale
fingerboard: Ebony with pearloid ovals
finish: Tobaccoburst
pickups: PJ
controls: volume, pan, filter, Q switch, bass cut/flat/boost, treble cut/flat/boost, mono output
birthday: not recorded, but likely early May 1990
originally made for: Washington Music

Washington Music was the first store to sell the Elan Plus electronics regularly. This seems to be a pretty typical example of what they were selling in the early 1990's, with the exception of the finish. Usually the Tobaccoburst was clear in the middle, bursting through one or twoo shades of brown to the edges.

The original owner of this bass was from North Carolina and it was purchased in October of 1990.

Chuck-

If you get a chance, P-L-E-A-S-E post a picture of your Elan.

I've got a thing for Elans, especially the burst ones....

mica or anyone else...re 90h5977 elan hlb+4.  the bass is not tabacco burst as records show. its more of a dark red burst with a gold center fading thru several shades of red to an almost burgundy color.much darker than a cherryburst. it does not appear to have been refinished. there is another one same color in showcase that i believe was also shipped to washington music center(chuck levin rest in peace).could this be a bookkeeping eror?      chuck

Probably not an error - what we call Tobaccoburst is similar to what you describe. A picture will help me tell you for sure, but I think you have the 1990 version of our Tobaccoburst.

Eric's is the begining of a Vintage Wineburst. This Elan has a typical Tobaccoburst finish, though it did shift a bit.

I would be surprised if the wrong color was recorded, since I've haven't seen an example of that error before. Among our finsihes, the Tobacco burst probably went through the most iterations.

It's probably best to describe the color as what it looks like now to you. I've seen colors change over time, depending on where they were stored.
