(x) 74~53 Identity Crisis Guitar...
« on: May 27, 2010, 08:05:47 PM »
Hello,

I am seeking to find whatever information I can about my very curious Alembic Guitar. I have had it for years and have never known much about it, and all the research I have been able to do out of books has led to nothing. The serial # is 7453. I will post a photo or 2 shortly. I think it must be a custom model, and someone at a music store told me it was made by the daughter of the man who started Alembic, but I don't know if it's true or how he would know that.

Thanks!
Peter.

Welcome Peter!
It looks like you've got yourself a very early 1974 Alembic!
We can help you as soon as you post pictures, and Mica (aka the daughter) will help you out with whatever she finds on the records!
If you are having troubles posting the pictures, you can send them to my email (just click on my username on the left) and I will resize them for you.

Greg

Here's a couple images... I forgot to mention that I wouldn't mind getting some input on value if possible. In the pictures the Alembic symbol is missing, but I have it, and I am intending to re-attach it as well as doing a general spit and polish shortly. You can see along the base of the body where it had the unfortunate event of undergoing a cyborg attack, which alas, at least  we can be grateful for it's survival.

Hi Peter,

Nice Guitar !
I like the headstock.
74' 53 is Long Scale Guitar on record that I know.

I love early Alembic instruments with own history.

Very nice indeed! There is at least one other early guitar with six-on-a-side tuners, Carlos Alomar's Series guitar, which went up for sale a couple of years ago.

I'm quite curious... what exactly do you call a Cyborg attack??? Watching those tiny 4 holes, the only couple things that came to
my mind were a) a Bigsby trem, and b) a guitar synth pickup (which would be VERY interesting.. although Alomar's guitar had it in a different way, as far as I can recall... gotta find that 1987 Guitar Player mag to check again... was it in the Strat Mania issue that they interviewed Carlos?)

Hi,

Thanks for all the great comments and input! Yes, 'twas a roland synth pickup that in a former life was attached to the body where you see the 4 holes.

Thanks,
Peter.

Still catching up on requests, but I'm already to February's, which is pretty good for me.

I can tell you that I didn't make this (or any other) guitar - I was only 3 or 4 when this lovely instrument was made. The peghead was fairly typical at the time, I've seen several examples.

It might take a while to research the particulars, but if it's more than a month, I always send you an email with the details as well, so you don't have to check here everyday.

That is absolutely lucious!  I want - badly.

Well, there isn't much in the file:

LSGI Series I guitar (though we didn't call it a Series I back then)

top: Walnut
body: Birch
back: not recorded
neck: Walnut is all it says, but obviously there is some Birch or Maple in there too.
originally made for: LD Heater

Sorry there isn't much to report on this one.
