Well, a tidbit here:  77-964 was one of the last instruments produced in 1977 (#970 is the earliest 1978 instrument I have logged).  
 
No data on the build, but the birthday is probably mid/late December.

Why don't you post a picture, maybe we can guess about the woods, etc? That's always fun and some of the folks here are quite good at it! Plus some here have their own files on Alembics.

most likely the instruments around ca. #77-925 till #77-964 ff. were all completed during January 1978...

This bass is stamped #77-954, but it's 'birthday is listed as January of 1978. Mica explains the reason for that in the lookup. It's a close neighbor to your inquiry. I've personally met, and played this one. It's special... one of my first experiences with a Series I.

77' 964 was MSB with Small Standard Body in My archives.
The bass has walnut top.

78' 966 LSG is the first of 1978's in my archives.

File Found!

Not much in these oldies, but here's what we know:

top: Cocobolo
body: Cenizaro (aka rain tree aka monkeypod)
back: Cocobolo
neck: Purpleheart and Maple
scale: 32" medium
fingerboard: Ebony
inlays: mother of pearl
originally made for: private sale, owner's name withheld
birthday: January 20, 1978

This is the first record I've seen with a monkeypod body!

Found this reference for monkey pod as a tone wood:

“ I would broadly characterise the tone of Monkeypod as falling between Mahogany and Walnut- it has more clarity than Walnut but provides more fundamental than Mahogany.”

It also can have nice grain patterns for use as top and back woods.
