(x) Instrument #98EVH11852
« on: December 20, 2013, 03:43:22 AM »
I have owned this fine instrument for years but have never seen any other Alembic bass with such body shape.

This instrument seems to be a mixture of several models, having a three piece (only) maple neck with walnut veneers, but having electronics of the series kind.

There is no backside veneer on the mahogany body, front side shows maple on mahogany and makassar on top.

I would highly appreciate any information on this bass.

Unfortunately the tuning pegs have been exchanged by the original owner. This bass since has chrome Schaller tuning pegs with a D-Tuner. What is really annoying is the fact the original tuners left four ugly drilling holes...

Hi Chris, welcome to the club. It can take a while for alembic to officially give you the build record for the instrument but if you could post some pictures here we can fill you in with lots of details.

Chris:

You have a beautiful looking bass.  It's too bad the change over to different tuning pegs required some redrilling but given the location, only you will ever know. Do you know whether it has Series I or II electronics? People have Alembic make so many modifications to custom instruments that I can never tell just by looking at a bass whether its I or II.

Hey hammer,

not totally sure, but I think it has Series II electronics. I am still wrestling with all the pots and switches :-)

That is a gorgeous bass.  I've always loved the EVH body shape and the top wood on this one really works with the body shape.

I'd guess it's a Series I with a master volume added.  If it were Series II, those q-switches would be CVQ knobs instead.    Either way- it's beautiful.

Thank you all for your comments and your support so far!

@tbrannon: you are right, it has an extra master volume. Unfortunately I do not have any of the original documents that usually do come with an Alembic instrument.

Does anyone have a user's manual explaning the Series I electronics?

Nice looking bass! Yours has the same body shape as mine. Wish mine had Series electronics like yours, but I do like the East Meets West electronics in mine. Enjoy your bass!

@jazzyvee: Thank you! That post of Mica's answered all my questions!

@mtjam: I am sure your bass still sounds fantastic the way it is and it sure had a smaller price tag to it ;-)

That is an AWESOME Bass!!! What?s on those EVH basses that makes them so delightful? ;) Unlike (In my very biased, personal opinion) the Other kind of EVH basses (chuckles), which I SEVERELY dislike . May you enjoy it in good health, as I?m pretty sure you are already enjoying it in playability and sound quality!

Hi Chris,

Here's the details I found out about your bass:

serial number: 98EVH11852
model name: Edwin Van Huik Signature Bass
model number: EVH4
top: Macassar Ebony
accent: Maple laminate
body: Mahogany (light weight)
neck: 3-piece Maple with 2 Purpleheart pinstripes
scale: 34 long
fingerboard: Ebony
inlays: Pearloid (plastic) ovals
finish: Polyester satin rubout
pickups: SC-1
controls: Series I
originally made for: Edwin Van Huik, for his personal collection
birthday: October 26, 1998

Since Edwin already had so many Series I and II basses, this was not supplied with a power supply and cable.

I've noted in the file that the tuners were changed from the original Gotohs and that the master volume was added.

Very pretty!
