Spoiler, Buzz on 3rd fret on the G-String
« on: April 11, 2006, 09:20:24 AM »
HI,

I recently aquired a 83 Spoiler via Ebay, I had several problems with my purchase (loose and damaged inlays, bad refinish, PU balance:-). Everything is settled so far however
the one remaining issue is a buzzing 3rd fret on the g-string.
There is some minor fretwear but it is not too bad. The trussrods are both totally relaxed so I had to increase the bridge height considerably.
It now is acceptable when playing fingerstyle. But it is intolerable when while slapping and popping.
(More Buzz than tone especially one the mentioned position). I put funkmaster 30,50,70,90 on this one but with other gauges I have the same problem.
Any Ideas how to bring this otherwise fine bass back to playbility???

There is very slight forward bow (usually exactly as I like it:-).

A single fret buzz indicates that that fret may be too high and need crowning. Since the bass is more than 20 years old, perhaps a fret mill is in order and will correct the buzz.

To use the light gauge lower-tension strings, you may need to have a heat bend performed to increase the amount of available forward bow since you said the truss rods were totally relaxed. Is there any forward bow in the neck?

Mmmmh,

I'd rather not contact these guys as one of the owners tried to legally harrass me for selling a couple of my Laklands over the Internet. Station music is the general importer blabla:-)

Any other suggestions:-) ?

Thanks for all the help.

Have you tried raising the nut on the G-string side? It may need less than a millimeter.

For instructions, check the FAQ/Must Read section (Bob's famous post on setup comes to mind) or the Support pages of the main Alembic site.

I would ask local bass and guitar players about a recommended tech. Station Music isn't located very close to you anyway, but they may be able to refer you to a person with a good reputation that is more in your region.
