Jim:
Welcome to the club and congrats on the new Tribute. Here's a little info that might help: First of all, the Tribute doesn't have humbuckers per se. Alembic doesn't make humbuckers. The pickups on your Tribute, both the humbucker shaped ones, and the single coil shaped neck pickup are actually humcancelling pickups. They are composed of a single coil pickup stacked over a dummy coil (no magnet in the middle.) Alembic also makes single coil pickups, but these are found only on Series instruments. As for pickup height, there is no right and wrong answer - it as all a matter of taste. Most people find the gain adjustment to be more critical than pickup height. The gain for each pickup can be adjusted individually by the little blue and white trimpots inside the electronics cavity. A little turn can make a big difference, so I suggest adjusting the gain in small increments. Enjoy your Tribute. I have a custom Further (10/07 Custom of the Month in the archive).
