Author Topic: Help! No signal from F-1X Direct Out (Read 249 times)

I'm not getting any signal from the XLR Direct Output on my F-1X. I'm running Full Range to my power amp (works fine), but I get zero when I run the mic cable to either a mixer or my recorder. Everything else on the F-1X seems to be working great. All the other components and cables have been tested and work with other in/outs. I've switched to the unbalanced Full Range out to record (works great), but I'm going to need an out to the house for some gigs soon and I'd like to be able to send a balanced signal to record with. Any help out there?

Are you using the efeects loop? If your direct out is switched to post the effects loop is in the signal path and you might need to exercise the jacks, since they can interrupt the signal flow if they've gotten corroded.

Thanks, But using the effects loop or not, Pre or Post, no signal. Not only that, I had the effects loop jacks replaced in November by Alembic and I exercise them regularly. They're in much better shape than I am. Thanks for the info.

It appears so. I haven't been using it that often. I justed started doing some home recording this week where I needed to check the signal myself. I also use it at a regular once-a-week gig. It's a small club and the sound guy never mentioned he wasn't getting any signal, so I assume everything's been OK up to this point. It's possible he didn't notice a problem previously (not needing a whole lot of sound reinforcement in this small venue), but I'm not sure. So I really can't say for sure when the problem began. Maybe I'm doing something wrong wiring up my recording setup. But I thought all I had to do was to plug an XLR cable from the F-1X out to an input on the recorder or a mixer. I did that with the DI set to PRE and nothing. Then I set it to POST and nothing. Does it matter which (if any) F-1X outputs are used in addition to the DI?

Following up on what you said about the sound man not mentioning any problem, have you tried a different cable?

Yeah, I tried different tested cables, different channels, and even different mixers.

The only thing I've been able to find is that the direct out has its on transformer, so checking it might be the next step. Since I'm not an electronics person, I don't know how to go about doing that, though I'm sure it involves using a multimeter to test current at each stage of the ciruit. And if you're not an electronics person, you will probably want to have an amp tech do it since there are dangerous high voltages involved. Hopefully some others may notice this thread and have more helpful information. You may want to open it up and at least look for any components that look burned or leads that look loose or broken, especially look for breaks where capacitors are soldered.

John, I think you need to send your F-1X in for repair again. If we serviced it, and it's still malfunctioning, we will make it right for you.

Thanks Mica and Ron! Drove to Santa Rosa and Ron replaced a bad IC chip while I played a beautiful Series 4-string with a Balanced K body they had in the showroom. Left my house at 11:15am and was home by 3:00pm. There are some advantages to living here in spite of the high cost of living. You couldn't be any nicer, thank you.
