How to fix the brass nut
« on: February 27, 2008, 05:52:35 AM »
When changing strings the brass nut came off the top (head) of my SC brown bass. It looks like it was glued originally. Can I glue it back on? What glue should I use?

Hi Wilco, welcome to another Dutch member!

I wonder if you have a custom Brown Bass with a historically correct fixed brass nut - the new Brown Bass comes standard with an adjustable nut.

The adjustable nut has three big holes between the string grooves, for the allen bolts (inbus-bouten). The two on the outside go up and down to set the height, the middle one goes up to unlock the nut and down to lock it again (or was it the other way around - I keep forgetting).

There would also be a 1 to 2 mm thick base plate in brass that the allen bolts work against.

People will start banging bottles of beer on the table soon, demanding pictures - and before you know it the thread starts discussing motor bikes.

Hi, mine doesn't have an adjustable nut, it's a solid brass one with no holes or bolts in it. I'm the first owner, it came from Alembic like this, I don't know why it's got a fixed nut (well it's not fixed anymore, it's a loose fixed nut now).

Did you get it through Edwin van Huik's store in Hilversum?

Just a small drop of superglue will hold it in place until a tap dislodges it. Some of the first Brown Basses had fixed nuts, and it's always something that the customer can special order.

Thanks, I'll use a drop of superglue. When I ordered my brown bass I told I wanted it to be close like the original one, so I guess that's why there's a fixed nut.

Yes, I bought it via Edwin's store. I'm in love with this bass, I'll have to post a picture one day.
