I was practicing yesterday and heard a scratchy noise that makes you think your cable is going bad... But it was the my right angle 5 pin plug that was moving. Obviously the insert was loose so I took off the back plate and tightened the strain relief screw but the hole in the insert is stripped. I thought about a bigger screw but I'm afraid it will crack the insert. I don't want to glue because you have to be able to remove the screw. I'm thinking about putting epoxy in the hole and let it harden, and since the existing screw is self tapping that should work. Does that sound like a good plan? Howierd

Howard,

I can't tell from the photo but on some of these jacks there was a small metal plate with a threaded hole which slid into a slot on the insert and served as a nut for the set screw. Check your bass carefully to be sure there are no other loose bits rattling around. If you find this piece you should be able to reassemble it all. Another tip is to pull the entire jack out of the bass just far enough to get a straight shot at that adjustment screw...

If you are a solderer, instead of repairing this piece I would take the opportunity to replace the entire jack with a new one. Just make a map of which wires go to which pins!

I replaced this insert about 25 yrs ago when one of the pins broke and there wasn't a metal plate. This screw is the original set screw that was in the old insert.... I really don't want to replace it because it's a real pain to replace. I'm going to try the epoxy later today and see if that works and if not I'll replace it again.

Well everything's back together and the epoxy worked. I Think I'll use my straight plug for awhile.
