I've just bought some short scale Rotosound strings for my SC Deluxe and the blue silky wrap stuff is resting on the nut. Am I OK to remove that or will removing that cause the outer wrap to unwravel?

Jazzyvee..I don't think so, it is only there to protect the tuner capstans, the windings are firmly fixed to the core on most strings

Hi Jazzyvee, you can certainly remove it but you must buy for medium scale, not short scale next time But, I want to know exactly what strings you bought ?

Thanks Terryc, Pierre, the strings I bought are Rotosound RS66s Stainless Steel Swing bass strings 40, 50,75,90. The gauges seem very light and I only decided to try them out as they were in a clearance sale so cheap enough to try out.

Just put them on after removing the silk and they are really too light for me. The sound is very thin, with no body and the strings are too loose. I will change back to the alembic short scale strings when I next pick up the bass,

You're not asking, but I've being using the GHS's Bassics that has no wrapping at all and always cut the excess. I don't like them making much more than 2 turns around post, so I cut the end and never got any problem with that.

Some people claim it can ruin the Strings, but I simply bend and cut it before inserting them inside de Posts (pegs?). Never saw a string unwravel and my strings never loosed sustain or tone by doing this...

Thanks Mario, I always measure the string length against the next tuning peg or the end of the headstock. So when cutting the E-string I measure it up to the A-string tuning peg and cut it at that point. For Installing the A-string I measure it up to the end of the headstock then cut it at that length. Then once I've poked the end down the centre of the tuning peg, there are enough wraps to keep the string firm after stretching in.

I was looking on rotosound web site, the string we need for SC basses are RS 66 M:

I use the D'Addario EXL170M as well, but of course found out that it's the medium scale that will correctly fit an Alembic short scale bass. They seem to work fine though the E at .100 is a little smaller than I would like. The Alembic is a .104 if I remember right.

Yeah I usually get Alembic Strings from JustStrings.com but as I was at this guitar show and they were cheap I decided it was worth a try. Hey ho, at least I know not to buy them again.

jazzyvee..mark king uses that guage and I tried them once too years ago but like you found the sound far too thin..ok if you are slapping all the time as you can really go fast but for playing funk, r'n'b, reggae they are definitely a no go.
