"Goop" on preamp card

Let me preface my post by saying I know very little about electronics except what I've read here. Anyway, I opened up the control cavity of my newly acquired 1981 (I think) Series 1 to get a look under the hood. I found some whitish, epoxyish stuff sloppily applied where the pickups and humcanceller connect to the preamp card. There is also some similar stuff in another location on the card. I've heard of people like Dumble trying to conceal their electronics circuits from others, but never heard of Alembic doing this. The electronics cavity in every picture I've found of Series basses looks very neatly done with no evidence of this bizarre substance present. I realize my post is no good without pictures, but I don't currently have any.  : )
 
Does it sound like some hack got a hold of my bass in the past?

Probably some silicon used for its mechanical strain relief properties.  
Sloppily is not how Alembic do it. Retrofitted by another? Most likely.

Definitely doesn't look like Alembic work. I am enjoying the bass very much, although I feel like the neck pickup does not have as much output as the bridge pickup, despite its trim pot being turned up all the way. Still playing around with pickup heights to try and remedy that situation. Doing my first gig with it tonight. Can't wait!
