Author Topic: SF-2, F1-X and cabinet issue (Read 432 times)

I recently acquired a set of Phil Jones Cabs (8T/16B) from Loch (who even delivered them to me in Minneapolis from Chicago) and I'm having some difficulties dialing in the tone I desire with the Super Filter. The PJB cabs aren't new to me since I've played with the 9B/6T for quite some time until the 9B piece was stolen after a gig. What I'm getting is a very clear, but quite bright treble-focused sound no matter what I do with the SF or any of my basses (and this is with TI flatwounds and even when I've tried my old EB-3 with the system). I can hear changes whenever I tweak the Superfilter so I know its working but I just can't seem to dial in a nice mellow bottom end. Any suggestions?

Hi Hammer do you have an SF-2 manual? If not here is a link to a pdf. I assume it's connected correctly so you might want to check out some of the examples shown on page 4 of the document as a starting point. Also check the appendix for other methods of using connecting the SF-2 in your rig.

I do have the manual and have tried several different ways of connecting the SF-2 up based on the manual's suggestions (both as 3 channel mixer and through the effects loop). I've also tried just about all of the recommended settings and while they all sound quite different, the tone is still far too treble heavy. What I find most confusing is that I did not experience this problem when the SF-2 and F1-X were connected to the top half (6T only) of my former Phil Jones rig.

Can you dial out the treble if you turn the direct
signals to zero?
In Stereo mode...using just the left filter...If you have the settings at :
Direct Gain- 0
Filter Gain- 6
Freq- 100hz
Damping ratio- 4
Filter type- LP

...does this produce lots of bass and no treble?

I'd then test the right filter with the same settings.
I'd then switch to mono mode, turn the channel 2(right side) filter gain to zero.
Blend in some dry with the bassy signal in channel 1.
Bring up channel 2 filter gain and find a complimentary freq area to blend.

Have you doublechecked to make sure you are using the full range output on the F-1X?

Yes, using the full range output on the F-1X. Did not touch any of the connections I was using with the previous cab. Just unplugged the link between the power amp and old cab and plugged it in to the new one.

Problem solved. And it had nothing to do with the SF-2 or F-1X. Apparently when transferring the power amp from atop one unit to the other I somehow managed to turn on a bass cut switch on the back panel of the amp. I actually forgot it was there.
