What's this all about?
« on: October 30, 2015, 11:25:05 AM »
Just giving my bass a look over and noticed this cut/slot either side of the neck core. inside. It's not something I'm worried about it just looks a different construction method not noticed on my other basses.

Looks like the core wings has been made from two pieces of mahogany although you would see it from the side of the bass!!!

Yeah Terry that is what I looked for when I noticed. It doesn't look like it's two pieces. I wondered if it was the way in for the jigsaw to make the hollow core.

I don't think my '79 has those cuts, maybe custom ordered version of obscured F holes? :-)

It's simply the hollowing access - the bandsaw has to start cutting somewhere. It's completely normal. We tend to aim it between pickups if possible now, and it's also glued up with a shim veneer as well.

Since this bass has obviously been refinished, you should make sure the shielding in the electronics cavity wasn't painted over - it's actually something I wind up seeing too frequently in refinishes.
