Fron Pickup Volume Messed Up
« on: January 08, 2016, 11:25:22 PM »
Just got a little 76 SI and it has very loud volume in the first pickup selector positiuon.  In 'both on' position, it acts pretty normal, until you turn off the bridge pickup's volume, and then the front volume goes silent, also.  Click the pickup selector switch back to to first position again, and it booms loudly again.  I've never had series bass do this, and am too stupid on drugs to trouble shoot it, probably.  Any ideas?  Might just send it in to be fixed by the pros.  Except for this minor irritant, it is a great bass!

I would do the exercise all the knobs routine first (twist them back and forth 40 plus times), then I would carefully pull off the Molex pickup connectors and then re-attach them (small gold plated connectors from the 3 pickup wires attaching to short wires off the main circuit board with colored bands on them). If that does nothing, then I would pull off the pickup connectors again and check the pickups with a VOM meter to test the pickups.

If the knob and switch exercising doesn't sort things out, the next test is to swap the pickup inputs to the board - as seen above.  Make it red to blue, and blue to red.  This can tell you if it's a pickup problem (not likely) or a preamp issue (possible, but also rare).

Let us know what you find.

I did play Twister on all the knobs for a while last night.  But I can try that some more in a bit.  Sounds like the perfect excuse to swap out the pickups like I planned to do, with the new pair that came off that four string that got changed to a fiver.  I have a crew coming tomorrow to clean out my mother's apartment and do some work in mine, too, so I think I will wait till next week to do cavity stuff.  I'm real slow these days, and there is just so much to do at both places.  Thanks for the ideas.
