Not very clever, I know, but mine came with names....

The Rogue
The Exploiter
The Persuader
The Spoiler

Although, some of my band mates have taken to calling the Rogue The Earthquake Machine

JP - I'm sort of in the same league with you and Magni, maybe even a little worse.

my bass

I'm not much of a collector, so after getting my 'first' Alembic, I now have my bass and my old bass.

I guess i'm just not into naming stuff, always seemed to have trouble with that, but they both know how much I love them, so it's not a problem, certainly not a lack of affection (even if one of them is only being looked at with fond memories these days...).

I have only named one of my Olympics (My neighbor, and old deadhead, actually called them this last week - I have read the jokes about Olympics on here, but it is soooo different when someone actually calls them this).  My 20th is named Butterscotch, as it is old and yellowed to a butterscotch coloring on the body.  I never call it Butterscotch, except in contexts such as, Please hand me the butterscotch one.  My other Olympic is the brown one.  The only bass I have with a 'real' name is my old Les Paul.  Old Blue, though it is a dark brown, never leaves the house and may get played once a week or every other week, at the most.  However, it is definitely not last in line when polishing and maintenance times come around every season.

It's funny how names come about.  The only Basses I have with names are my custom Alembics.  All the others have names like - The '68 Jazz, or my walnut Excel and so on.

Dark Prince came about when I saw another featured custom called The Purple Princess.  I figured that since mine was a 36 scale 6 string, I couldn't refer to it with a female name.  Also, I remembered that someone once called me that when I was a kid.  I went to a really white bread school, and I stood out.  Anyway, it stuck for the Bass at least.  The original Dark Prince soon turned into the Evil Twin after all the grief we encountered when it was being made (and even now!). So, I ended up with two Basses!

Black Byrd is the name of my current custom.  It's also the title of an album by Jazz trumpeter and composer Donald Byrd.  Since I discovered him, he's become my all time favorite musician, to the point that I wanted to name my Bass in his honor.  As well, Black Byrd just sounds so appropriate for an Ebony and Purpleheart Alembic custom.

Everybody now.....Go out and buy the album!!!

Hey Rami,

Good to have you back amongst the Alembic fold.

Methinks if you had to name all your basses, you (or anyone else for that matter) would probably have a hard time thinking up that many names without repeating yourself, LOL!

Cheers,

Kevin

on the lighter side..

Too Many Daves (sic basses)
By: Dr. Suess

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn't a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave! she doesn't get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
And one of them Shadrack. And one of them Blinkey.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O'Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Ziggy. And one Soggy Muff.
One Buffalo Bill. And one Biffalo Buff.
And one of them Sneepy. And one Weepy Weed.
And one Paris Garters. And one Harris Tweed.
And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt.
And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt.
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate...
But she didn't do it. And now it's too late.

Dr. Seuss, what a genius.

for the record, I've never named my basses. It's always been the (fill in the blank).

Well, things change as time goes by, and so do names apparently. The names I came up with at first sounded nice, but weren't very practical and to be honest, I didn't actually use them very much (those @#$%%! basses never listen anyway!) With Birdy gone (anxiously awaiting my new Glockenklang amp to arrive) it's the 'Walnut Brothers' that remain: monsieurs 'Flame', 'Burl' and 'Graft'...

I just got my new '95 Alembic bass, sort of like an Elan with sort of a larger Orion-ish body, and due to its ability to speak in low tones, I decided an Entish name made most sense.  But then, its neck is anything but slow, so I need a name conveying more speed, which as anyone knows, is hardly a likely attribute of the Ents.  And then it hit me: Quickbeam was considered the closest thing to a hasty Ent by none other than Treebeard himself, and so I grant a fitting name to my new (and only) bass:  Quickbeam!

Alright another Tolkienite. Mark The Ent One, or would that cause confusion with Ken The Elvish One?  Quickbeam is a good name for a fine bass.  I haven't taken time to comment on it in your introductory thread yet but it is very nice indeed.
