I reluctantly began giving lessons again toa son of a guy who trains at the Kung Fu school I attend. After a few weeks of getting an appointment cemented down, I went over to the house. His son is 15 and as all teens are very interested in the internet but not incredibly keen on practicing an instrument. His dad sets up a small amp and brings out a peavey hard case. I unzip my 83 Spoiler 4 and as I turn around I see a familar site. It is a 82 Distillate with a figured walnut top! I proceed to ask him about it and check it out up and down. This is one lucky 15 yr. old. Well, the lesson went on and hopefully he will practice the basics I taught him. Before I left I changed the strings on it and adjusted the neck a bit. Next time I'm bringing some lemon oil for the fretboard. I already told him what it's worth so I can't get it on the cheap if he wanted to sell in the future.
Ya just never know what you'll come across these days.

Well, if that's the lad's starting bass, he's got a better chance of sticking with it. There's no doubt that he will progress more rapidly and with greater enjoyment than he would playing on a $200 beginner bass with high action and the tone of a sewing machine.

Of course, if he does give it up, I'm sure someone here will offer him a fair price for it.

Just call him grasshopper and make him start out by hitting hot sand and waxing your car for the first year!! Then when he loses interest, do the 'snatch the Alembic out of my hand' thing!

Yes, when he decides he's got to have something else, the LEAST you can do is take it off their hands, 'you play, I don't know WHY I bought him that thing, HERE!'

No, but his dad still wants him to practice. i don't push students on the bass. i also don't want a reluctant learner wasting their parents cash.

His dad needs to put the bass away in a corner and threaten the kid's life if he touches it. THAT will guarantee the kid plays the hell out of it at every opportunity!
