Is an SF-2 any good for guitar?
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:02:59 PM »
I have been thinking of setting up a stereo rig for my Series I Guitar.  I already have a Roland JC120 and wonder if it would be beneficial use my SF-2 in the circuit between the DS-5 output and the two channels input of my JC120?

If that is not a good idea. Could I use the SF-2 as a pre-amp into a guitar power amp something like a marshall power amp or a mesa boogie stereo power amp?

Yes,
I use mine for guitar, both clean and overdriven.
You can use it before your JC-120 but start with the levels LOW....around 2 or 3, and watch out boosting the sub lows ( which is one of the things I love about the SF-2 with my bass),
...the JC-120 won't be able to take lows like your bass amp.
Just watch that gain structure and it should sound very good.

You'll have to see if it's better running stereo into the separate channels or switching the SF-2 to Mono and using just the main channel .
I would try in mono first to simplify things, but you might find a benefit in having separate volumes on the amp for each channel.
You could also try sending one signal from the DS-5 to the amp dry and use the other to go to the SF-2 in mono and then the amp. If your using effects this way could be handy if you find the SF-2 has too much influence on the sound (I find even the direct signal running through the SF-2 has a bit of a compressed sound).

It will also work as a pre before a power amp,you just need to find the happy spots in the gain structure, if you hear clipping pull the levels back on the SF-2 and increase them on the power amp.

Happy hunting!  ; )
