F2B's and tubes - what are you using ?
« on: March 31, 2006, 03:38:29 PM »
As I'm not a 'gainiac' I dropped a JJ EC82S, which is a real tame 12AT7 (IIRC) into the A channel in place of the Sovtex 12AX7 that was in there when the pre arrived.  Seems a little less mid-focused with a smidge of 'smiley-eq' sweetness was the result.

I'm going to drop a NOS 12au7 into Channel B which should have even less gain than the EC82S. I'll run the Dark Star into that side as that pickup is hotter than heck.

What are you folks using ?

Malcolm; I might be wrong, but it is my understanding that the tubes are not one for each channel.  Rather, I believe it is the case that the first tube amplifies the signal from the input jack and occurs before any volume control, and that the second tube feeds the output jack.  But I could be wrong about this.  Maybe it's the case that the two stages share the same tube for each channel.

Each channel has it's own tube.  Looking at the board inside, the circuit for each channel looks identical.  A good way to compare tubes is to put one in each channel for quick a/b'ing.  Out of the tubes I've tried, I prefer the Telefunkens.

Gazooks, so I'm definitely not the only one here who has heard of Baudelaire. And post 3# - I must have missed the other two?!

adriaan - that's an affirative to your Gazooks!  I don't know why it never came to me before but with Mal as my first name it works on a number of levels.  I don't work nearly as hard on my evil as I do my garden though...
