You saw pictures?  All I saw was a table of contents.

First frontal picture of number 1 I've seen You probably weren't around for the guitar special published by Muziekkrant Oor back in 1975 or 1976 - this was when Oor still looked like a krant, and when my dad reviewed audio gear for them a couple of times (Testkeesje).

My older brother (Kees, obviously) cut out all the pictures of nice looking guitars, and put them up on the wall. Unfortunately they were all tiny little snapshots in B&W, but from one of the blurbs I learned (at the tender age of 10) that Alembic #1 had pickups that could be adjusted on copper tubes. If I remember correctly, it also mentioned the Grateful Dead and Stanley.

COOL!!!  I'd never seen any pictures of that Casady test bass.  Shame that one's not around anymore.

Thanks for the link.

FYI:

That picture of Casady's bass is how it looks today. It is still around and is owned by a club memeber who wishes to remain unknown.  It originally had more knobs!  The electronics in it today are standard PF6 stuff.  The top was replaced too so the PF5 electronics could be mounted properly.  That picture was taken out of Bass Player magazine when they did a feature on it a few years back.  The graphite necked short scale was also lifted out of Bass Player.  I did not read the articles because the font was too small.  I am going to have to check it out later when I have more time.

Michael,

Thanks for that clarification.  I thought that the bass turned into a tester that was eventually destroyed- am I confusing the bass in the article with another?  Was it the Osage Orange bass that eventually got destroyed?

Osage Orange eventually delaminated, if I remember correctly.

I bought this book and really like it.  Lots of ink about the 'usual suspects', terrific section about ALEMBIC, and lots of articles about basses from far off the beaten path.

The Alembic bass with Modulus Graphite neck circa 1977 is obviously mislabeled.

Michael, thanks for the update; oh, and the articles are really good!
