Spring break in SLC
« on: January 20, 2005, 11:49:11 AM »
Thanks for the interest, everybody.
The short story is that the family and I want to make the 4-5 hour trip to SLC in mid March.  We want to take 3 days or so and see the Mormon sites, the lake, shop a little (not for an Alembic, just the mundane stuff), and maybe go up to Promontory.
I did my post mainly looking for advice on a good guitar shop to visit.  But meeting, hearing some other Alembics, jamming, etc. sounds great.
The family hasn't really sat down and planned what all we want to do.  Any suggestions on interesting stuff?
If a jam session could be planned along with things that the family could do, that would really be helpful.  It wouldn't work to leave the wife and kids somewhere and go play music.  Do any of the SLC Alembicians or possible jam partners have families?  If we could all meet somewhere that everyone would have something interesting to do, this could work out really well.  The boys are 7 and 11.  They both are into music and might enjoy listening to the jam session.  But, just in case, other options would be necessary.  My wife would probably be happy visiting while we play.  I hope the family doesn't push for a veto, this sounds like a lot of fun.
Just some thoughts.  What do you think?
Rich

Rich, I have spoken to a good friend of mine ( a fine drummer) about this meeting/jam session and he has offered his home for the meeting. He has regular jam sesions with friends there every Wed's in the evening but is usually free on Tuesdays too. I don't think he'd mind you bringing the family as I have brought my son on occasion. As soon as you can firm up a date I will contact the other Alembicians in SLC and make the arrangements. I'm sure Fredguy will want to attend!
If you run short on time we could skip the jam and just meet and compare basses. Either way it would be great fun to talk Alembic for an hour or two ( or three) and make some new friends. Mike

Mike,
Thanks for your efforts on this.  I'm not as concerned about the boys as I am my wife.  The boys would probably be content to stick their noses on their Gameboys if they didn't want to listen.  My wife would probably like to just visit if there is a spouse or girlfriend she could talk Alembic widow with.
She may plan on working Wed or Thurs.  We haven't planned it out that far just yet.  I would love to jam so I hope we can work it out.  If not, meeting would be good too.  I'll post info here as I know anything.
Oh, what part of town do you and the drummer friend live in?  We'll be coming in from the south east.
Thanks,
Rich

We are both located not too far from the mouth of Parley's canyon (I-80) Most of us are married so there will be at least one spouse in attendance. My wife will most likely be there to take some pictures. Mike

My wife and I discussed the trip last night and it seems that we'll drive to SLC on Sunday, March 13th.  We will need to leave on Wed, March 16.  If things could work out on Tues, March 15 that would be great.  If Tues doesn't work then I'd still like to get together somehow.
Ed, I'm not really a senior voter since the meeting place isn't mine, but my vote is the more the merrier.
Mike, what kinds of music do you guys play?  If there are certain artists or songs you guys play I could do some homework and get up to speed faster.  I play lots of different styles.  For just jamming, I generally get a groove going with the drummer, play in that pocket for a while, then get the groove to take on a different style, and play in that pocket for a while.
Now the touchy subject.  I will, of course, bring my Epic but bringing my amp may be a problem.  I know how people with nice rigs feel about this but I'll ask anyway.  Would it be a problem to play through someone's amp?  I definitely am not an abuser. You know the kind; they turn everything up to 11, stomp a couple of effect boxes and you can't dive at the volume knob fast enough to save your speakers.  NOT ME.  I certainly will respect your wishes and work with your decision.
It looks like we'll be staying at about 4500 south and 600 west.  I guess that's only about 6 or 8 miles from your place.
This is cool.  I was asking about a guitar store and look at what seems to be coming together.

COOOL.  Thanks for your efforts coordinating this.  Also I appreciate the amp use.  How about it if we e-mail phone numbers and addresses, etc later?
What kinds of music do you guys do?  I'd really like to prepare a little if possible.
What about Snoop Oggydoggy?  Are you around SLC on Tues, March 15?
Does this count as the first Alembic Convention?

Glad it's March 15th at the garage rather than the 16th as then I get two jam nights that week. As for style of music it's pretty much up for grabs. Most Wednesdays we just pick a beat, a key, a change and go from there.

Haven't heard anything in a little while.  I assume we're still on for a jam session in March.  If any of you SLC Alembicians have heard from the others please just chime in here and let us know.  See you all in a month.

Pardon my ignorance, but where exactly is SLC?
