I have a couple of questions in regards to 5 string basses. I own a 5 string Orion with the original Alembic round wounds. I am not fond of round wounds and have also not been happy with the tone or feel of the provided B string (sounds and feels loose).
I have been using light gauge GHS Brite Flats (ground round wound) on my other basses for years and have been happy with them. They only come in 4 string sets but GHS has a .130 gauge single string. This seems to be common for most folks offering ground round wound (say that 10 x's real fast) strings.

Would the heavier gauge tighten up the sound compared to what is currently installed?
Current is .128

The gap from .098 (E string) to .130 seems to be pretty large.
Is the difference really significant?

i have an orion 5 also- i switched to TI flatwounds and have been happy ever after
i have done no adjustments other than just very very slightly drop the bridge height on the b string side
sits in the saddles nicely and is the best sounding strings i have used- you'll get used to it, the ti b string is a .136- i had the same concerns but thanks to val, am now a happy camper

Well with all the folks around with .001 inch string clearance and still trying to get it lower, it wouldn't surprise me to see someone lower the action for a heavier gauge string. :-)
