Adjustable Nut On Tribute
« on: May 30, 2005, 01:30:35 PM »
To anyone,
I had a luthier take a look at my Tribute to see if he could get the action lower than what I had done. He seems to think that the Nut on the guitar is adjustable. Is this the case? If so, there is a screw in the middle hole, but nothing in ther holes to the right and left.

Yes, it should be adjustable.

The center screw is for locking it down. The two outer holes should have small screws with allen (hex) heads, that are used to raise the nut, perhaps differently at each side.

The procedure is that you loosen the center locking screw, then adjust the outer screws to your liking, then tighten (gently) the center screw when done.

The outer holes should already be threaded; the trick will be finding proper screws. But look carefully again - maybe you just didn't see them?

If there really are none, then your nut must already be down as far as possible, and to go lower you would have to remove some material from the back of the nut.

Bob,
That makes sense. What I'm trying to do is raise the nut a little bit. But, there are no screws in the outer two holes. I can see the threads and there is a hex screw in the center hole. How can I get the outer screws?

Since this is a brand new guitar, you may want to give Mica a call.

Even if your Tribute wasn't brand new, you could still give Alembic a call and I'd bet they would help you out.  I bought my first Alembic last year - an '83 Electrum.  Alembic has supported it as if I had bought it new.  They are just simply the best at customer service of any company I've ever dealt with.  Enjoy your Tribute.

Hello Gil,

I guess it's possible that the hex side screws are missing, though unusual. I can send you 2 screws, no problem.

Well of course! When I said 'the trick will be finding proper screws', I was thinking about running down to the hardware store, but realizing I'd probably just have to call Alembic and have them mail me some.

(Send him an extra one, Val, they're pretty tiny and easy to lose.)

Val,
Thanks! I took the guitar back to Mark at Allegro just to be sure of the screws. Sure enough, the two outer holes are empty. We took a magnifying glass and could see the threads inside. Do you still have my mailing info?

Thanks,

Gil

Hi Gil,

The height screws will be on their way to you tomorrow. And per Bob's excellent suggestion, I'll send 3 in case one of those litle buggers gets away from you.

Mica,
Thanks very much for this! Yet another reason I'm happy to be part of this!
