Pickup screw locations

Does it matter which of the four pickup screws are UNDER the pickup?
 
On my bass, the screws under the pickup are located diagonally acrosss from each other. They are at the neck hole under the low string and the bridge hole under the high string. This arrangement seems to make the pickup lie flat. If I move the screws to the 'other' holes, the pickup gets pitched toward the bridge.
 
Has anyone seen this? Is there a preferred mounting scheme?

Welcome to the club, Chris.  
I don't know if there is a certain way that they were designed to work.  I did a very informal survey in the Showcase section.  They are all diagonally across from each other as they are with yours.  As far as which way they go diagonally, it seems to be mixed.  I randomly picked some pictures to look at and found that it is about 50/50 each way.  
I hadn't noticed before how they are on my two Alembics.  One has them going one way and the other has them the other.  Now I'm curious if they were designed to be installed a certain way.

There isn't really a preference, since it should work the same with either arrangement. You should be able to get the pickup to tilt with the lower screws in either diagonal position, it just depends on their relative heights. Make the screw under the bridge side of the pickup lower, it will tilt toward the bridge. These height adjustments depend on the screws all having the same heads.  
 
The system is designed to be rigid and also for ease if replacing a pickup. When you remove the upper screws and the pickup, the new pickup will drop in at exactly the same height as the original.

One other thing to check is to see that the pickup is pretty flat on the back. If it isn't that could also explain the difference.
