Done business with these dealers?
« on: August 14, 2005, 10:02:48 PM »
Has anyone done business with Mammoth Music in So Cal, or G Guitars?  Any advice, pro or con, would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Michael

If you're talking about G Guitars in connecticut, which is the only one I know of, I have dealt with them, and they were great.
I purchased my six string hollowbody Modulus from them, and they were nothing but helpful, and the bass arrived no more than two days after the purchase, in perfect shape. I HIGHLY recommend them.

I think the bass is still in the sold part of the Modulus section.. but i guess that doesn't really matter.

Take it easy,
Austin

Michael - I'm working with Chris at G Guitars right now.  He's been very helpful and efficient, and he's quite knowledgable about gear.

Personally, I wasn't impressed with Chris at G Guitars when I ordered my Alembic. He was pushy, not real polite and impatient. He wanted everyone else to do the work, then he'd beat their price by pennies in order to avoid being one-upped. That and he wanted to be paid up front in full in cash (only) for an order soured the deal for me.

I went with Steve Frank over at Superbass. A real gentleman and excellent to deal with. I ended up with a much better price and awesome customer service!

Beaver and Gard over at Bass Central are tops to deal with, and the folks at Bass Northwest are good to deal with also.

Just my $0.02.

Cheers,

Kevin

Thank you for the Welcome!

I ordered it from Chris at G Guitars.  His price was the best of everyone I checked with, and he gave me great service.  I would have checked with Bass Central, but they don't carry the Tribute or Further.  It was a very difficult choice between the Tribute and Further. The final reasons came down to a fondness I have towards cocobolo.

I'll be playing it through a Mesa F-30, but I am giving some consideration to getting a Fender amp for its clean channel.  Before the Mesa, I had a Hot Rod Deluxe.  It isn't as flexible as the Mesa, and its pots seem non-linear... especially the Master Gain, but the clean channel has a lovely timber to it.  I'm not into effects, but may play around a bit with my Pandora.

Thank you for the welcome!
Michael

Actually, my experience with Chris at G Guitars was the exact opposite of Kevin's.  When I ordered my bass they were still called Giampietro Guitars.  I guess G Guitars is a little easier to pronounce.  Chris was very patient with me, even though I changed my mind about a lot of things before and after I placed my order.  I made final payment just a couple days before it was shipped.

There were other dealers who promised to beat Chris' price if I simply told them what it was.  I didn't.  Actually, I don't think Chris was even the lowest price, but through talking to him I was more comfortable with him than the others, and the price differences weren't that great.

I met Gard when I was in Orlando and stopped by the REAL happiest place on Earth (Bass Central).  Great guy, very knowledgeable, excellent player, and unfortunately, no longer at Bass Central.  He now works for a bass manufacturer in North Carolina.

Peace,

James

I've had nothing but great experiences with Chad at Bass Northwest in Seattle and Paul Schein at Chuck Levin's in Wheaton, MD.  Both are very knowledgable about Alembic, particularly Paul Schein.  He helped me with a couple of my first custom orders, and although he is a busy guy he really knows his stuff.

Well, the Tribute arrived yesterday and I spent most of the evening getting acquainted.  Simply put... I was blown away.  Opening the case for the first time left me speechless. The clean sounds are the best I've ever heard.  If I had been smart, I would have gotten the Alembic first and would have never had to bother with any other guitar.  I find the controls very intuitive. I think my PRS is going to be very lonely in the future. Unlike my Stratocaster, the Alembic doesn't make me feel like a better player.  I hear 'everything'.  I hear how my fingers move on the strings. I hear the pick against the strings.  The frets give me much more control of the vibrato, so I hear all the little nuances.  I learned last night that I suck as a guitarist... so I get to study more (LOL). There is a ring and resonance from the guitar that is a university course in harmonics and tone. Well, I'll stop gushing now and get back to playing.

Cheers,
Michael

Congratulations Michael. You have discovered the magic of these instruments. After owning it for just about a year, my Skylark is still a great treat to play. I have discovered sweet-spots in the volume and filter pots, and continue to be most impressed with the variety of tones and textures I can get.

You're right about Alembics revealing every picking and fretting nuance and articulation. My playing has improved because of this. Best of luck with your Tribute and don't to forget to eat and sleep from time to time.

By the way - post a picture in the Showcase section when you get time. =)

Congratulations, Michael.

I'm glad your first Alembic purchase was a pleasant one. Unfortunately, you've already discovered the perils of an Alembic: it spoils you for anything else! Enjoy your new purchase in good health.

Cheers,

Kevin
