Power supply question?
« on: August 17, 2005, 11:21:26 AM »
Suppose a guy could come up with a 70s model Series I, without the power supply, can one be ordered from Alembic. How much? Also, I read about the batteries being smaller than regular 9V and can still be bought in the medical field. I don't have a handle on this, not to mention the need for an electronics upgrade due to RF. HOw much is this? Any help, or point to a previous thread would be appreciated? Thanks....

Yes.  You can still buy an external P/S from alembic, they normally sell you a 5 pin cable with it.

I can't remember how much a new power supply is; but it is not inexpensive; there's probably a post around here somewhere that mentions the cost.  Every once in a while a used one will show up on Ebay; but not often.

I don't know what year the battery size changed to the regular 9v.

You might not need the electronics upgrade; it depends on the bass and where you will be playing.  And it's not inexpensive either.  The cost depends on the year; and somewhere around here there is a post that breaks it down.  There's also the cost of shipping the bass to Santa Rosa and the cost of being wihout your bass for a while.

I found a post from a member that mentioned $425 as the new price of a power supply.  But the post was from a year and a half ago, before the last price increase.  That should give you an idea anyway.

I found the message with the upgrade estimates a fellow member posted.  Again this is from a year ago before the last price increase.  So if you were to decide to go this route, you would need to contact Mica or Val for the actual price.  But this will give you an idea.

Series I/II Upgrade
2004 PRICES

1999 and newer: no charge except for transportation
1995-1998 $850
1985-1994 $1250
1975-1984 $1500
pre 1975 $1500+

Here is a link to the older style battery.  It is an 8.4 volt battery that is just a bit shorter than a 9 volt battery.

Power supplies are also not that difficult to build. I have made a couple of them. The real hard part is to make them look as nice as the good folks in Santa Rosa.

PS I gave you all a wave as I drove down 101 today, but I bet no one noticed! :-)
