I was practicing on my 20th Anniversary and noticed the gold-colored strip on the side of the neck right at the fingerboard and was wondering if there is a layer sandwiched between the neck and the fingerboard or is it just a decorative stripe?

Gale,

Until a few years ago, there was a sacrificial laminate under the fingerboard, to facilitate replacement. There was a nice discussion about it a couple months back, just search on 'sacrificial' and you should find it.

I just walked over and picked mine up and examined it. Mine does not have the sacrificial laminate between the fretboard and the neck, so now I am curiously confused about what Gale is describing in his post. Got a camera? Are you talking about a laminate or something else? My Series II (84) has this laminate, but not my 89 20th Anniversary.

Side Note: Our basses were made 10 apart - yours is #031 and mine is 041. Therefore, I am thinking they would probably be more-or-less identical, since we both have the quilted maple ones (Unless a 'custom' option was requested).

Curious Question: Have all the 20th Anniversary basses been made and sold??? Probably so, but since I am curious and typing anyway . . . .

I had a 20th Anniversary years ago. It had the laminate under the fingerboard. It was 89 AM 001

hi gale i own two 20th anniversary basses 90am074 in maple and 92am124 in walnut. they both have this laminate between the fingerboard and neck.

Poor Nigel,

From what I understand the reason for having a sacrificial laminate was that when they replace the fingerboard, any damage in the operation would be done to the laminate and not to the main wood of the neck. In such a case it would be easier (not to mention less costly) to replace the laminate than to replace the entire neck.

So perhaps at some point the fingerboard has been replaced on your Anniversary?

If they no longer include the sacrificial laminate when building a new bass, then they must have come to the conclusion that it's not worth bothering.

I sit corrected. The one on my Series II is easily visable. I got my glasses from work today and took a good look at my 20th Anniversary and it does indeed have the sacrificial laminent. It is much darker than the one on my Series II and I simply could not see it without my glasses.

From Gale's post - noticed the gold-colored strip on the side of the neck Hey, you see what you expect to see, or in this case you don't. Mine is close to the darkness of the ebony fretboard. Not golden at all. OK, it's there. Call back in the life guards. It is safe to go back into the water again.

Hi Guys,

brand new here, with a brand new (well new to me!), beautiful 20th Anniversary, serial 90 AM 075, walnut/maple neck. Its just the most beautiful thing to play :-)
Does anyone know a rough guide to what this bass is worth on the second-hand market?
