My first alembic and a couple of questions
« on: April 29, 2004, 06:50:00 PM »
hi all,,, just got my orion 5 string
i live on the water in NY- HUMID in the summer
gig bag or hard case? my dealer did not have a hard case- i have an old fashioned coffin case that i keep my eko fiddle bass in.. its been given an eviction notice! lol- but the orion fits inside nicely..
should i use some kind of desicant?
strings? my bass is a 2000 model  and came with the original strings.
does any one use the elixir nanowebs?
it took me 4 hours to make the purchase... but i was grinning like a one eyed chesire, like a diamond eyed jack all the way home...
any other advice or guidance or tips is greatly appreciated. proud to be a member

Hello flaxattack,
Welcome to the club! If you check the Support tab on the home page, you'll get a lot of good advice (An owners manual for instance). I use other strings on my Epics, DR high beams on my fretted and lo-riders on my fretless. Be ready to encounter several men named Paul and listen to their mysterious and enchanting chant. My first advice: Don't leave your Orion plugged in, you'll drain your 9-volt battery.

I'll bet you were grinning...

Congratulations on your new bass.  Looks great, but the picture's a little blurry (I'll get my pitch in before those Paul guys do...).  More pictures!  We thrive on 'em here.  Don't ask why, its a small aggravation to put up with for the fun and support that can be had here.

But seriously, we really would love to see more of your bass.  You are welcome and among friends here.  I can speak from personal experience (as would many others) that this is a friendly and helpful group of folks, representing all styles, ages, experiences.  Professionals, hacks (like me), hobbyists, everybody.

Welcome.  Don't be a stranger (and don't forget the pictures!!).

i took the photos at the store.. i keep having to trim the photos to get down to the max kbs allowed. but boy was i impressed- at 12 midnight ny time i got a call from mica on some questions i had sent in. meanwhile, i put on the elixers. i slight problem i think is that the .130 b string is  taper wound and the full diameter is not sitting in the bridge. so i might be having a slight buzz on that string- do i just raise the nut a touch?  replaced the strings 1 at a time in this order-a-e-d-b-g- i doubt there was any movement. hindsight being 20/20, i should have busted the shops nuts for a fresh set or brought my elixirs with me- just in case i bought the axe. thanks for the strings advice. wouldlove to hear form others as to what brand  they use. better photos tmrw! promise- right after i call my insurance co to register.

Brother Jeff ...welcome to this jolly gang of walkers in the park of the low ferquencies. Bunch of good friends indeed with the most acceptable addiction in the world: basses ...oh ...huh ...okay  that must be Alembics for the most of us althougvh I am not THAT loyal.
Anyway, after some serious cleaning of my glasses I discovered the blur due to the pictures ...so ...please we are all waiting for some more juicy Alembic pictures of that beauty. In the meantime I'll ask brother Paul the fake one to count for the big-bottle-table-banging ...

I play the Elixir Nanoweb strings now since one year and I'm very pleased with them. Very nice feeling and the sound lasts much longer than on other rounwounds. So they are worth the extra costs.

Good morning Jeff and congratulations on a fine bass.  I know you're going to love it.
I can't comment on your elixir question but I do know something about humidity.  I'm in Florida near the coast.  If your bass spends a lot of time outdoors or, God forbid, sitting in a vehicle then you could consider some type of dehumidifier.  There is a recent thread on this subject around here somewhere.  If you are mostly inside in the air conditioning there shouldn't be a problem.  I've had several basses over the years without any trouble from humidity.

Along with the pictures of your Orion, I'd like to know about your amp if you don't mind.

Again congratulations and welcome to the family.

Jeff, congrats on your new bass, and welcome to this club/family.  I too cannot comment about the strings but I can tell you that I live in Montreal, surrounded by water, and in the summer it's as humid as N.Y., or worse. My personal rule of thumb is, if I 'feel' humid, chances are so does my bass.  There are a few different types of dehumidifiers available and they all will do the job.  Just don't leave your bass in the car, schlep it with you.

Oh, don't forget, post more pictures!!

what's an amp?
ok you guys may freak out. i dont play out yet- i own a fender 12 inch right now- i use a line 6 bass pod-which i love a lot- into the fender or by itself and back out through beyerdynamic 250-80 headphones- i live in a condo and my neighbors are cranky and a pain in the ass- its sunday afternoon - turn down your bass- living next door to me- today she will learn the real meaning of amplified music- lmao
btw if you need cans- these ARE it. they are 160ish and worth every cent-i can my my eye balls vibrate in their sockets with the right settings- our band practices in an apt in bklyn and i run the line 6 directly into a mixing board and all the instruments run out through the headphones-the drums are electronic, so all one hears is a bunch a stoners yodelling... it really works out pretty damn good
if i had my druthers, i like the swb twins- iam looking to start plying out- so down the road....

Jeff, it's French/Yiddish (Friddish).  I know all about the 'neighbours' subject, so at home I only use headphones (Grado Labs; reproduces as low as 14 Hz), but my office is sound proof, that's where my amps are.

Man, you have more gear than I do right now.  I'm using an 8 Hartke.  That's it, no line 6, no headphones, no cranky neighbors, no band.  My gear budget is in the rebuilding stage at the moment.
