The Activator sets with a filter but without a Q switch have an always-on boost of 8 dB for a narrow frequency band around the cut-off frequency. Adding a Q switch actually gives you the option to not have that boost (leaving just the "natural" resonance of the LPF).
There are a couple of variations of the Q switch, like 2 or 3 positions and various levels of Q boost, but you'd need to confirm what is available for this particular set-up. I had a Spoiler with a 3 position Q switch for 0, 3 and 6 dB, and to my ears a 3 dB difference was fairly subtle, and a 6 dB difference pretty noticeable - but I felt both were an improvement over the original 8 dB, which I felt sounded a bit harsh.
Another update would be the Pan Preamp, which gives you a separate level for each pickup, making it easier to balance their outputs. I think it does replace the two volumes with a volume and a blend.
