Strings for the Nightbass
« on: June 13, 2004, 04:58:40 AM »
I want black strings for the custom Rogue currently being built - I also want a dark sound - i.e. not bright. So far have been looking at black La Bella tape wounds.

Recently I've seen a few other black strings advertised - Black Diamonds and DR Black Beauties. Does anyone have experience with these, or any other, black strings - which would be best for a dark, heavy sound?

Fender also has a set or two of tape wounds. They may very well be one in the same as La Bella's.I know that DR has in the past, made custom minimum orders for friends of mine but I don't know if that's still true.May I suggest placing pieces of foam to the sides of the strings rather than under? If your looking to try this quickly and don't have any foam on hand, run down to the local drug store etc. and go to the girly section there's bound to be those foam things the women folk use to separate their toes for the nail polishing(I have two daugther's and a wife and the've all been pissed at me at one time or another.Tone first, nails later!).LOL

I play Black Diamond strings since I have an endorsement of sorts with them and they sent me a few packs of the coated strings and they were a little too dark sounding for me but they last a long time. They said that they would send me a few packs in the gauges I like(50-70-90-110-120)since that was the main reason I really couldn't use them.I am looking forward to getting them for some of the blues gigs I get however and if anybody is interested,I will post a report as to how they perform.

This place seems to have the best service/prices of any online shopping I 've found if you can't find them in your area.I really like DR as well but I haven't tried they're coated yet.Hope this helps and congrats on the custom job coming your way.I just love a good Rogue.

Barry - you might be right about about La Bella / Fender as La Bella refer to the tape wounds as Fender strings.

Dave S. - the Black Diamond site describes the strings as crisp, bright - which is not really what I'm looking for.

The DRs look promising.

Haha, you are right.I haven't been to they're site yet for some reason. They probably are too bright for your needs but not enough for mine.Good luck on your search and I can't wait to see the NightBass finished.
