Bernunzio's usually has some pretty cool old banjos... this looks like a nice bass. Have at it.

While shopping there, if you feel like dropping a quarter-Mil on something pretty rare-

My dad's house was blocks away from there. I popped in there a few times while my dad was still alive and before we sold the house. They have some great stuff but I do find them at the high end of pricing. I have a student model classical guitar I bought there. I leave it in Lockport to practice on when I visit.

I have no idea why the 1975 S1 has a footswitch included in the photo gallery...

I wondered about this too... for quite a while. It was probably just in one of the case pockets. But that still begs the question; why?

I'm asking, because I really don't know the answer. What happens if you plugged a one-button footswitch into the treble out of a DS-5 box? Would it/could it function as a mute button, by switching from bass to treble outputs? My very basic understanding of these switches is that's all they do, short a contact.

Yeah, no. If you plugged the footswitch into the Treble output of the DS-5 the bass would be switched into stereo mode and only the neck pickup would send signal out of the Bass output - regardless of the footswitch status. And no sound from the bridge pickup.

That switch must have just been in the case and they weren’t sure if it was original equipment.

Thanks Jimmy J, figured you might see and weigh-in.

I guess it's just the case of something in the wrong case. Now we'll just have to wonder what it could belong with. 😊

*my Dad missed out on a 1926 Gibson PB-5 'ball-bearing' banjo some years back that Bernunzio had in on consignment. He had in mind for us to convert the original plectrum tenor neck to a five-string. Instead, the missed opportunity led to us designing a Style 5 inspired banjo of our own, with wood inlaid into wood on the back of the headstock.

so this is similar to a DS-5 mod that i'm thinking of.  my stage setup has no pedals or outboard equipment - i go straight from the bass to my amps.  i drive two amps out of my DS-5. at  my next show i'll probably be trading off the SII and the (stereo anniversary )fretless which has an adaptor to mate its TRS output with the 5-pin cable.  i need to mute the stack when i change basses between songs.  it's gotta happen quick.  turning off the amps is not an option.  there can't be any buzzing or popping while i do this so i'm thinking of putting a mute pushbutton on the DS-5.  some kinda scheme to ground both channels while i swap basses. latching.  make-before-break.  i dunno.  gonna play widdit.
Been down...now i'm out!

Yes, that would work fine.  It doesn't need to be anything but "make" because it only needs to short the outputs, not interrupt them. A DPDT wired to the ground and hot lugs of the two 1/4" connectors would do it.  A toggle would make it easier to see which position it's in (unlike a push button).  I recommend UP for mute and DOWN for on so you can swat it when you forget (like I would  :o ).

Here's a modded DS-5 I used for a while.  The DI out is summed mono but not padded.  And the tuner output is also summed using a different pair of resistors.  This way I can short the DI output and the tuner is still far enough away - resistor-wise - to keep hearing the signal.

Neato!
