RIP Gary Karr
« on: August 03, 2025, 11:27:36 AM »
I'm going to assume that many here will not recognize the name, but Gary Karr, IMHO was the guy who, long before Stanley, demonstrated that the bass could be a solo instrument. Not the electric basses we play, but the double bass.  And he did this while playing in orchestras. The only reason I have any recollection of him is that years ago when taking bass lessons for the high school orchestra, the music teacher who taught me how to play upright considered him to be a God and talked about him non-stop. Over the years, I only got to attend a single concert at which he played and his work was outstanding. The only way to describe it is that he played the bass as if it was a cello or violin.

Yeah, this is a big loss. Gary was for decades the premiere ambassador of the solo classical double bass. A mentor to many. Thanks for posting this.

Legendary in upright bassist circles. I'd say Stanley probably agrees with that.
