A Time Capsule
« on: May 17, 2025, 03:25:10 AM »
Yesterday the concrete base was put down for my home extension yesterday afternoon. I had decided a while back that i would put a time capsule under the building for someone way into the future to find. It is a stainless steel contailer in which i have put some laminated photos of me and my family and close friends,a bit of a bio and my musical history and some items such as coins from here, St Kitts, some of the countries I have travelled to some ethnic non precious jewellery i’ve not worn since my teens as gifts. Also in there are photos of my musical instrument collection and one of the small enamel alembic badges.
What would you put into a time capsule for a future human to find?

I have written documents regarding true life events, for therapeutic reasons, a means of “letting go”.  Would be tempted to leave them.

Good question, Jazzy. I'd probably do something similar... a few personal artifacts and pictures along with a description. Which ones though? Don't know.

Reminds me of a recent experience... I had pretty much 'cleaned out my desk' a while before retirement, to make way for my trainees. See, my desk was the central operational point of a Water Treatment Plant, and they really needed that space to work. But I had accumulated thirty-some years of knick-knacks and stuff, not just swag from trade shows, plenty of that too, but I mean a few useful things... I packed up certificates in frames, awards for whatever, personal items, pictures, books... just moved it all out of the way and let them sort of take over that last month or so. I had everythng condensed down to two boxes (impressive) and ready to leave with me, all the useful items I left for the team. I thought I'd spend a few days sifting through it once I got settled-in at home, and hang a few frames up, maybe decorate my desk here at home to remind me of those days as an Operator. Guess where those boxes are... (?) Ha! - right in the closet I shoved them in when I got home that last day. The one outstanding item, a potted plant... it seems very happy on the kitchen table after living on my desk for years.

I'm not sure when it dawned on me that I really didn't want to see any of those things or be reminded of the past 30 years for a while, so I just subconsciously avoided it. Maybe I should make a time capsule to myself, and open it in another 30 years? Sounds about right.

As an historian, I am well aware of how often the official story is anywhere from slightly to entirely fictional - so I'd put in an account of what's really happening in our world, who the villains are, why that is so, etc.

And, just to be nice to anyone who may survive into the future (I'm hearing Zager & Evans right now.......), a nice, hermetically sealed container of excellent weed.

I was SO READY to retire!  I did the same thing Greg.  Put the stuff in the closet and stayed away from past co-workers & old classmates for 10 Years!  Then about 10 years ago, I started re-establishing connections with old classmates and see quite a few nowdays.  I was in a close-knit community of Engineers.  The school I graduated from provided Most of the sea-going Engineers and we have known each other since our teens.  Yup...the boxes are open now....most of the old textbooks went to the recyclers and I'm still wearing the old work clothes for yardwork.  I don't think there will be anything of me left behind.  I'll probably be buried at sea and my only family are 2 nieces that have never really established a connection with me.  It's not sad.........I'll just sail off into the sunset.
Where are we going...and why am I in this Handbasket?

A handy invention; I'd imagine that it would be hard to ride if the bars didn't end.....

Bar ends?  Isn’t that what happens if the supply of alcohol dries up!

I was curious… now I know more.   My ‘dual purpose’ bike has them and they really are more comfortable.  Thanks Tony!   That certainly should be documented, bet it is an interesting story.
