Discount for Series 1 with headstock repair
« on: April 13, 2025, 06:53:00 AM »
I am interested in a '77 Series 1 bass that was previously sent back to Alembic for a headstock repair. Is there a typical % discount on the price expected, even if the repair was very well-executed?  My main concern is what other buyers might expect if I ever try to resell it.

My understanding is that if Alembic repaired it, then it is as good as new.   The 70’s Series electronics may be in need of an update.   Others here have more knowledge and will most likely share it.
Pictures would be nice.

Curious as to why you would consider to sell a vintage Alembic prior to even buying it?

What is the serial number of the bass you are considering? Someone here may have owned it and might have some insight.

My own opinion, if a headstock repair is done well professionally and is solid, then it is not a concern. One way to think about it; a scarf joint is essentially a well done repair.

Welcome Hugh, we haven't met but I see you've been here a while.

A properly repaired headstock wouldn't stop me from buying a vintage Alembic that I really liked. How much got discounted on the sale would depend on how much the repair showed. Alembic having done it, It could be indiscernable. It could still be obvious, depending on how involved the repair was. Me, I wouldn't pay 'full price' (whatever that is...) but I wouldn't expect a half-off sale either. A solid repair is a non-issue from a structural standpoint. So is the rest of the bass in collector's grade condition and this is the only wart? If so, that's a shame. If it's just one more scar, congratulations... you got yourself a great bass that you don't have to worry about getting a scuff or two on.

True story; just happened this past week in my shop. A regular client of mine bought a Guild 12-string online. When it arrived, the headstock was broken almost completely off, right behind the nut. It was shipped, tuned-up fully to pitch, and the headstock was unrestrained. I'd guess offhand it got dropped and the guitar got 'whiplash' inside the case... annnnd... snap-ola. The only thing holding it when he got it was the truss-rod cover and a little bit of the veneer face. The three-piece neck was snapped clean. So it landed on my bench with a great big question mark, and the conversation went like this... Yeah sure, I can fix it, and it'll be a solid repair, and you can play this guitar forever. But what I can't do is make it invisible. I also can't give you amnesia, so if it's going to bother you, after I fix it, sell it to someone who won't care and buy another. There's plenty more out there. I just strung it back up this morning. We'll see how they feel about it tomorrow. (it sounds amazing... I'd keep it)

So anyway, that's my advice... if that headstock repair is already bugging you, pass on this one. There's plenty of vintage Alembics out there without issues. Good luck.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback and words of welcome. I checked the serial number and it turns out there was a post about this bass on the Alembic Club back in November:

Regarding the electronics, the 1/4 inch jack connection has been modified, and the 5-pin disconnected (there is no power supply and cable anyhow). I could certainly live with the headstock repair, but it doesn't appear that I would get much of a bargain as a result of it.

That headstock repair is perfect.

I'm guessing the modification to the 1/4" jack was from stereo-to-mono, so you could play the bass with that jack and use both pickups. (since the 5-pin isn't working...)
Here's the problem with that 5-pin being undone... you can't play the bass without batteries. It's fine playing it with batteries, but you will need a bunch, as Series electronics chew up a set about every 20 hours. Getting a DS-5 and cable ain't no big deal, just post a thread here and eventually someone will pitch a sale. I would definitely see if they can get that 5-pin jack fixed though.

Truly is a beauty.  The headstock back story is a bonus.  8)

Thanks again, I really appreciate the feedback and advice. Based on your comments I've opened my search up to Series basses that come with a power supply and cable included. More cost upfront but I now see why it is worth it.

Good tactic… you would not want to gig with a Series bass powered by batteries. The bass in the link posted by Rob is being sold by a very reputable member here, if you decide to buy from him there will be no surprises after the fact. If you haven’t already done so I recommend posting a wanted ad in the “Wanting and Wishing” forum here, always best to buy from a forum member if possible. Good luck with the search!

+1 on that.  i think my last 3 basses (various series I & II, a status graphite, probably something else i can't remember) came from forum members.

good luck to all!

After looking over the listing of this bass, it seems like a reasonable bet. The neck joint looks fine and I'm sure the electronics could be brought back to the original wiring (I have wired up a Series bass before and it's doable, especially if all the parts are already installed.).

Just my 02¢.
