La Bella Super Polished string set
« on: April 01, 2025, 03:35:24 PM »
La Bella has recently made a formally 'limited release' string available in their catalog lineup. It seems like it's nothing new and just another steel ground-wound, but it has the qualities of a flatwound and a roundwound, yet leans a little more towards a flat. The sustain of the fundamental is very long, un-like a flatwound and this makes it a very articulate playing string, with the 'clunk' of a flat at the beginning of the notes that keeps going. When new the Super Polished starts off with a bit of roundwound in the tone, but it soons settles down to a smooth, slightly burnished tone. In comparison I've gotten to play an new old stock original Pyramid flatwound set on my Alembic (Mica asked for and has my Pyramid set for study). Most think that Pyramids are all about the nickel, but the no longer made, early, original version used by Alembic was actually made of chrome steel on steel core, which is much louder and punchier than today's nickel version Pyramids. This Super Polished set approaches the articulation of the original chrome-steel Pyramids, which also had really good sustain. This offering from La Bella isn't a Brite flat, it's different in tone and less stiff than the GHS. The La Bella set requires a wipe down with a soft cloth before installing. I use the 107-47 set which actually plays like a 105-45. They also have a light set 103-45. The strings tension actually loosens a bit after break-in, so expect an easy playing string.

Thanks for that review. I like Labella strings (I use the Low Tension Flats).  I will check these out.  I think Andy West was using these during their 2018 tour, might be when they were a “limited offer” set.

Rob, it's funny that you mention Andy West; I thought of him, too, with this set, and his using Brite Flats back in the day. I have Brite flats, too, and they are too stiff for me, and they don't have the tone of the Super Polished.

I don’t really like the sound of round wounds. I love the sound and feel of flats. But this is intriguing, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they sound like.  I ordered the 45-103 set  :)

Rob, you put them on and you think they sound like rounds, and then a week later they don't. Ballsy sounding.

How is the tension on these strings? I like the tone and somewhat high tension of the current Pyramid Gold strings but strings with just slightly less tension would be pretty appealing to me, especially if they have a bit more sustain than the Pyramids.

The 107-47 plays like a typical 105-45 roundwound set.

Intriguing report; thanks for posting.  I see they don't have a six-string set.

David, I should add to my post that Super Polished won't sound just like or play just like the original version of Pyramid, but they do have a distinct and uncluttered sustaining tone with some of the overtones inherent in rounds edited out. Also, the SP reacts well with the filter/Q of my Series 1. The old Pyramids were made with a much lower tension, too. I haven't felt the need to try the lighter Super Polished set. If you write La Bella they might tell you if a sixth string will be offered.
