Is it possible to specify a target weight for a custom build?
« on: November 01, 2024, 12:22:44 PM »
(Apologies if this question has been addressed elsewhere, I tried searching and didn't come up with anything)

Is it possible to order a new Alembic instrument and request that it fall at or below a particular target weight?

E.g., "I want a medium scale, small body, Series I 4-string bass ...but it has to be 10lbs or less." And then leave the woods used and/or design features employed up to the mothership to hit that goal? Has anyone ever done that?

I would imagine that they could accommodate that.  Best to email or call Mica to discuss. Sounds nice!

I would say it is absolutely imperative to inquire!

I am down to one bass now, and she is quite heavy :o

She's 100% hand made, and I can find no info on who built her :(

I have been using the "Zero Gravity Strap", by Cable Free Guitars!

It has helped alleviate the shoulder strain!

By all means connect with Mica as everything built by Alembic can be customized. We reduced weight on my Medium scale Signature by going with a 3/4 size body, doing a fairly deep tummy carve out and other things. Now you need to keep in mind that some things you might want to do could impact the sound of your instrument (e.g., are you going to forego the typical dual Purpleheart stringers in the neck) but Mica can inform you about all of that. Other things to consider would be whether not avoiding a back laminate would bring the weight down, using plastic vs. wood vs. brass control covers, specifying a non brass block under the bridge, using ultra light rather than standard tuners, etc. I’ve always wondered whether a Series I or II specifically built to be used with a SF-2 and F1-X for tone shaping would allow one to keep the Series sound but reduce the weight of the electronics in the bodies of Series basses and if this would really make a significant weight difference.

What hammer suggests has actually been done with the Refinement featured custom twins.

We can do lots of things to try and reduce the weight of an instrument, but it isn't always possible to target an exact finished weight. Woods and design features are always a collaboration between us and the customer. If there's a possible custom build brewing, but talk to me or my mom, and we will figure out how to get the final weight you want, with other features you want as well.
