"John Clarity Fretless" fingerboard process - anyone use this?
« on: September 06, 2024, 12:41:43 PM »
Anyone familiar with the fretless fingerboard resurfacing process that "John Clarity" promotes on Facebook?
Anyone have first-hand experience employing it? How'd it work out, how was John's support, was it worth it? etc.

I'm considering using it on my fretless 5-string. The >30-year-old fingerboard is definitely showing signs of wear (though mercifully it is not yet audibly compromised). I had originally considered sending the bass to HG Thor, but last I looked he had a very lengthy wait list, plus he was contemplating not taking on new orders. (Admittedly it's been a while since I checked Thor's site.)

The "John Clarity Fretless" process is DIY; apparently John sends you detailed instructions and a materials list, but you do the work yourself with John's coaching. Since I suck at DIY woodworking, I'm hesitant to proceed without hearing some success stories first.

Thanks.

I don’t have a Facebook.   I do have two fretless B grade basses.

Limited search via Duck Duck Go reveals very little info on the process.   It sounds interesting.

Well, further communications with John Clarity since I wrote the OP have also convinced me that he's a charlatan and a bit of a douchebag, so I will not be giving him my money and using his "process" [sic]. I'm gonna bring my bass to a professional to get its fretless fingerboard properly levelled.
