In need of a nut for Elan 5
« on: August 31, 2024, 06:15:39 AM »
Im trying to purchase a replacement nut for my Elan 5 and I’m not having any luck via phone or email.
I know we’re all busy these days but if anybody has a free minute to take my small order, I would greatly appreciate it!
My bass is down until I get this part and I’m having some withdrawals.  :(
Thanks,
Keith

In the past, it's usually been easiest to catch Mary at her desk between 10-1 Pacific. Not on Fridays when she's packing orders.

Here's my past experience ordering a replacement nut... (I wanted to have an alternate one for my Distillate for B-E-A-D tuning...) They can sell you a brass nut blank, but each one has to be custom-fit to your bass. No two of them are identical. If you are handy at all, it isn't hard to do. Any well-qualified repair shop should be able to shape and fit a brass nut for you if you aren't comfortable doing it.

*back up just a little... is yours missing completely or just somehow not working?

I’m aware that’s it going to be a blank. I’m capable of shaping it.
I bought my Elan last year and the previous owner had installed a basic brass nut (not adjustable).. I have no idea why they did that.
I’ve been trying to get the right part so I can properly set up my bass. As it currently sits, the string height is way to low at the nut and I do not want to put another shim under it.

When I get back to the shop I'll dig around in my spare parts... I sold that Distillate a couple years ago and I never did replace the original nut. I thought I'd given it to another Club Member, but that was the extra bridge saddles. If I still have it, we'll exchange contact info.

Hang on a little bit.

An appropriately sized shim shouldn’t create a non-functioning instrument.   Unless the slots are completely hacked/buggered up. Any pics?

Sorry about the trouble with this. I sent an invoice to you yesterday after our email exchange the previous week and the photos you sent on Friday. I will confirm here that you do not have a threaded insert in the peghead and that it will be provided with the kit. Like I mentioned in our correspondence, it's a good amount of work to fit it, but you can always ask questions if you have any.

I will resend it today. I edited it to let you know that it takes a few days to fabricate the nut after your order. Please check your spam in case my message goes there.

Looks like Mica's got you squared away. Good thing too, because I'm an idiot who can't read thread titles... the nut blank I had was for a Distillate 4-string...  ::)
