Cancelled again. and again
« on: August 30, 2024, 06:32:13 PM »
<rant mode on>
Auditioned for a cover band coupla weeks ago, went well, got ghosted.  so i answer an ad for a jazz band.  meet the bandleader, it goes well, shows me the set list, it's all jazz standards.  some i know, the rest he has charts for that i can sight read.  so he gives me a list of 5 songs, he'll have tthe whole band audition me next week after i prepare.  sounds great.  this afternoon he calls me and said the other players have concerns about my physical ability to help the keyboard player move her gear (the drummer's 78, the other 2 are boomer women.  i'm 68, probably woulda been the band youngster).  WTF?  if they wanted a piano mover  they shoulda said so and not wasted my time.  i looked on their web site and their last bass player was a kid in his 30's. the age gap kinda makes sense now.  i'm still kinda bent outta shape about it.  >:(

Not trying to drum up business for my former colleagues or anything, but seriously - explain to those fools that there are these people called "roadies".......

ok with all the sad news lately, maybe a glimmer of light here from castle BeenDown.

i've had 2 more tryouts since i last wrote about this misadventure.  it got to the point that i moved the good amp outta the bass corner and put the stage rig in its place vowing to not move it until it was going to a stage next and i got a good bi-amped tone out of it with the MKD (my gigging bass).

that day has finally come.  it took a lot of tweaking to get a good even tone out of the MB gear, still not totally happy with it, but i think i'm splitting hairs.  i'm playing a show tomorrow night, backing up a singer/songwriter downtown, so the ampeg and PJB go back to their rightful place.  the MB cabs get to enjoy a life of car trunks, seedy bars and beery bondage henceforth.  haven't been able to play the SII (or any of my other basses for that matter) for the last month while i get my MKD sound dialed in with this rig and i learn the new songs.  the dog's just gonna hafta find someplace else to sleep.  w00t!

so after all these trials and tribulations i auditioned this afternoon with a band of fellow 68-year-olds who were all long in the tooth but still had all their claws and chops.  setlist straight outta  the 80's.  the keyboard player had an original mid-80's moog.  the drummer (another tim) could sing all the high notes in don't stop believing.  i took the mighty MKD and the dog along and we had a ball.  this is band tryout #12 for me this year.  looks like it's gonna be a thing.  yay!
