The bass is in great condition structurally and cosmetically.  Some routing in the pickup cavities to make them deeper in the center, that should not be an issue.  The pickup cavities were not routed to make them wider. 


I ordered a new truss rod nut from Alembic, working on getting the old one off., which is mostly stripped. Does anyone know the size of these old truss rod nuts?


Neck is straight, fretboard in very good condition, frets in good condition with lots of life left in them.


The restoration has begun, should be nice when done.

Lots of potential there, Rob... really glad that one ended up with you.

Is the nut itself galled, or (hopefully not) the threads on the rod? I don't think there's any difference in the truss rod nuts from '76 to later... should be standoff 1/4". The newer ones are plated, but still brass. (better to wear out a nut than to strip a truss rod)


If it's just jammed on there pretty tight, you may want to clamp some camber into the neck beam to make it easier to back the old nut off.

76-582 is once again a fully functional Alembic Bass 😊

I have a 3-position Q Switch that I will also install


A great big thank you to Greg for providing the Fatboy Pickups, they sound amazing in this bass!


I will polish up the bridge and install removable plugs of some kind in the remaining holes from the inside.


Love the maple top and birch core as well 😊 🎶🎶🎶

I'd be tempted to put in non functioning knobs and 5 pin socket for aesthetics.🤔

Thanks for the suggestion, Jazzyvee.  The only non-functioning thing on there right now is the HX pickup, which fills that large hole. I would not want to give the impression that it is something that it is not by adding non-functioning controls.  Temporary removable plugs will work for now.  I have Series components that I am working on restoring, so it may become a Series bass again down the road at which point the controls will be added to fill the vacant holes.

For now the bass plays and sounds fantastic with those fatboys.  And Greg just suggested that I use black removable pvc plugs that will look nice and are removable, so that should work great. 😊

76-582 is looking great Rob... so glad that bass finally ended up with a Club Member to fix her. Glad I could help out. Those FatBoys lived in 80-1684 for a little while too. 


The plugs I suggested to temporarily fill the vacant holes are the same ones I used on my 12-to-6 and 6-to-4 Martin conversions. They are matte black finish, and from across the room will trick the eye into thinking a knob is there. Particularly on that maple background.
