Any leads for basses of these body styles are appreciated. Not particularly interested in Series electronics yet. I’ve been looking at a brand new MK but also want to see if anyone is willing to part with a Europa or Mark King Balanced K both in a 5 string. Thanks.

Jazzyvee, I looked at your Europa 5, it’s beautiful. Your in the UK right? I’m in the states so I will probably have to look nearer to home. Wish the bass was closer…but thanks anyway.

Chicago Music Exchange has a really pretty used Europa five-string for sale. No LEDs, though, if that is something you are looking for.

StephenR, thanks, I have contacted Chicago Music about that bass. Looks promising. I want to check some details, string spacing and overall condition. The photos look pretty good. Appreciate your input.

Jerry, I believe the serial number for that bass is 92u7535. I couldn't find anything in the club about the specs. You can always ask Mica.

If the nut width is what the say, 2.25 inches then I'm guessing it is a classic taper neck like my six string Europa.

Jerry... I forgot to tell you that CME usually lists used instruments on their website for a lower price than their Reverb listing. I just looked at the bass you are considering and the price is about $300 cheaper. If you want the bass I would certainly ask them about buying direct and exactly how much wiggle room there is on the price. Reverb has really high seller fees so if the vendor is a brick and mortar store it is always a good idea to see what the item is listed for on their website. Good luck with your search!

StephenR, I did mention the price difference to my contact and he sold the Europa at their lover price. Thanks for mentioning that. The bass is here and just as astounding as the Essence. They are an absolute pleasure to play. I will cool out on my purchases for a while now but I have plans for a Balanced K sometime later.

And FivestringDan, thanks for your suggestion, I will contact Mica with the serial number for specs.

Enjoy these lovely instruments everyone!

Hey Jerry... noticed this had sold and was hoping you were the buyer. Great that you were able to get them to lower the price a bit, too. Seem to remember that your Essence doesn't have a Q-switch, how do you like having one on the Europa? All the Alembic electronics sound great but to me the filter with variable Q is what allows you to achieve so many different tones and such a wide palette of useable sounds.

Hi StephenR, I am needing to be educated about how the Q switch functions. I haven’t tinkered with it yet. I will do the research but advise is welcomed. And the bass is wonderful in every respect, in excellent condition too. It was set up just as I like it and intonated correctly. The neck on both the Europa and the Essence is nearly flat. There are zero fret buzzes and height at 12th fret is about 2 mm on both.

Jerry- the Alembic Activator style pickups and circuit have a built in boost of about 8 dB that is always "on". As you rotate the low-pass filter the center point of where you have the filter set will always have the boost applied. The Q-switch allows you to turn it off and remove the boost which to my ears results in a rounder tone. Using any of the boost positions will only affect the attack of the note, it is most prominent and pronounced if you are a pick player. With a 3-position Q-switch you can choose between having no boost, a mild boost or the full 8 dB. Easiest to hear the effect if you switch the boost on and off and rotate the filter, in the boosted position it will sound a bit like a wah wah pedal. You can find some interesting tones with the low-pass filter, I especially like setting the filter somewhere near the middle or lower end of the sweep to boost the upper mids then apply some Q for attack. The way I use the filter is to kind of create my own pickup characteristics by varying  the center frequency and the amount of resonance at that frequency (Q). To me this is what makes it possible to find a sound that is unique to you.

Here is a post about filters and Q from the "Must Reads" section of the forum...

Sounds like you found yourself two excellent Alembics. Enjoy exploring all they have to offer, it is a deep well!

My bass has Europa electronics, I'll share my experience with it.

As StephenR said, the Q switch introduces a little bit of resonance just below the frequency where the filter cuts off. This sort of frequency response (flat response at low frequency, a peak, then highs rolling off) is a basic characteristic inherent in conventional pickups. Alembic pickups are different - they have a very wide-band flat response which provides the raw material for the filter to work with. Thus the filter with Q on can be configured to reproduce the characteristic sound of a variety of pickups just by adjusting the filter frequency.

In the Europa electronics, the pickup pan also affects the sound. Blending different amounts of the two pickups produces some fairly dramatic changes in the tone the filter operates on. There are also what I call the "tone preset" switches (the bass and treble cut/flat/boost switches) that affect the overall tone.

I have a few different starting points I like on my bass. One is to turn the pan all the way to the neck pickup, then back just a bit to blend in a little bit of bridge pickup - there's a point at which I hear it get just a little deeper and more powerful. Then I turn the filter down very roughly 1/3 of the way from fully open to where it "takes the edge off" the bright Alembic tone. Depending on exactly what I want, sometimes I leave the Q off and the tone switches both flat; or I turn the Q on and open the filter just a little but switch the treble to cut. This general range is good for songs that want a vibe similar to a Fender Precision.

Another is to set the blend in the middle (as it happens, the detent on this knob on my bass is in just the right place, it can be fine tuned with the internal trimpots on the preamp). This gives a tone that I think of as "chunky" or "juicy" (I know, those words seem contradictory, please excuse my mild synaesthesia). With the Q on, the filter sweeps through a range of Fender Jazz or Rickenbacker bass tones.

If I'm going for a darker tone, I roll of the filter more. Beyond a certain point, I much prefer to turn off the Q switch, it gets too "honky" (for lack of a better term) for my tastes.

And of course sometimes I just want that really hifi Alembic sound, and I run the filter (almost) wide open, Q on or off to suit my mood.

I've found all these tones just by fiddling with the controls and listening; I'm still (after almost two years with this bass) finding more nuances. I'll suggest doing whatever you like to do to put yourself in a state of mind for really appreciating the sound of your bass  ;) and spending some time exploring. Don't be shy about flipping the switches and turning the knobs! If you think you like your Europa now - well, you're going to like it more.

StephenR and Songdog, thanks for the information regarding the Europa electronics. During band rehearsal Sunday, I was able to explore the dimensions available especially with the Q function. Like it, it’s going to be alright.

I’m done for a while folks. I decided to bring this Mark King home. Photo is from the seller in NY.  I now have the Holy Trinity, the Essence, the Europa, and the MK, no disrespect intended. When I discovered for myself the quality of these basses, That was it. Playing bass is much deeper experience now…..but you all know that.
