Dead and Company at the Sphere
« on: May 17, 2024, 02:11:55 PM »
I had the pleasure of attending opening night at the Sphere last night.  My goodness, what an experience.  My mind was absolutely blown by every second of last night- sonically and visually.  I highly recommend.

I just saw some videos from the Sphere show.   As I watched it, I recalled an interview with Jerry, probably from 45-50 years ago.  He was asked why the Dead don’t do a stage show like many other top touring acts.   Jerry replied that the best stage show of all is a bunch of musicians thoroughly enjoying themselves.   I still agree with Jerry.  At least they don’t have dancers and choreography .. yet.

I also stand with Jerry.  I didn't like it when they started projecting the band onto screens (and wouldn't been in favor even if "the band" had not, in this context. meant "99% Jerry").

So which show did you see Toby, the one on 5/16 or 5/17?

"Althea" from the 5/17 I thought was pretty good. I also saw an extended jam of "Shakedown Street".

I saw Help>Slip>Franklin's from that show posted. It started with this projected graphic of The Wall being constructed behind the band.

You can see from that vantage point how incredibly big that thing must be. The stage itself looks tiny.

I was so incredibly impressed with the sound quality.   Felt like there was a DI connected right to my brain/body.  Combine the sound with the visuals and it was an extraordinarily live performance.

That video was pretty amazing.  And while yes, the visuals do detract from the experience of just watching a band that's playing great, I'm guessing this particular experience was probably pretty special for those who were there.

Regardless of the technology, I seriously doubt the Sphere can hold a virtual candle to the totally immersive visual, audio, and psychic experience resulting from the judicious combination of the Dead, Winterland, and acid.   Ahhh, the good old days!

Well, I'd have to say Alpine Valley* instead of Winterland, but otherwise I concur.

*I'm sure I'd say the Uptown Theater, but the 2 times I saw them there, alas, I just had weed.

Yup, I had my Alpine experience.  We thought the moon was a stage prop.

That video and the sound is awesome. I can't imagine how good the experience of being there was. Maybe there will be one of those venues built over here. Hopefully not in London though.
