Oh man...  We hope the damage wasn't too bad and they can get things put back together again quickly.  Don't know what we'd do without that club.

Leave it to Jazzyvee to alert us to our local news.  :o

It would be ironic if the fire started by microwaving potatoes without piercing the skins with a fork.  ;D :D ??? :)

The story is not as bad as it could have been with damage limited to one of the smaller rooms off the back of the club.  I believe they're even open for business this evening already.  Very lucky that the police happened to swing by at the right moment and see smoke.

Perhaps the best part of the whole thing was the band name on the marquee.  It's a great band headed by guitarist Val McCallum.  And just to be silly (because that's the way it's done at the Spud) they call themselves "Jack Sh!t" and claim the aliases Beau Sh*t, Pete Sh*t and Shorty Sh*t.  I'm guessing the firefighters at least got a laugh out of that.

I'll write if I hear any more details.  But, whew!

Hmmm. Well, next time somebody around here tries to tell me I don't know Jack Sh!t, I can truthfully reply that I do in fact, know somebody who does though. Not only that, he plays in a band.

Glad it wasn't too seriously damaged... sounds like a cool hangout. 😎

I played at the Spud last night and heard the whole weird story.  Whoever this criminal mastermind was, he gained entry by pushing in a window-style air conditioner that was built into the wall of the small back office.  He then stole a signed guitar and a couple computers.  Once in there he likely noticed the club's video security system and realized his actions had all been recorded.  It may have been at that point that he came up with the idea to torch the place, maybe thinking he could cover his tracks?  Nobody knows.  So he poured some gasoline in the room and lit it on fire.

The video security system saves to the cloud so they have a recording of the crime.  He missed a cabinet with quite a bit of cash in it - now black from the fire and soaked from the firehoses.  And furthermore, they caught the guy later that morning in possession of the stolen property.

Motive appears to have been robbery, not sure if arson was part of his initial plan.  And nobody knows if he knew the venue and specifically targeted the office or was just looking for something to steal and sell.  But the club is up and running with the exception of the "patio seating" in back which normally gets video and audio fed through the now destroyed gear in that office.  Insurance should get everything back to normal in time.

An unfortunate incident but it certainly could have been much worse.  Police spotted the smoke within minutes of it starting and firefighters were there moments later.  They broke through the front door, dragged a hose through the club and doused the office within minutes.  A few of the firefighters told Justin they were music fans and had been to the club recently.  Small world.

It really is small. Could just as well have happened to any of us, in any small-town USA or the rest of the world... the club or pub your Friday night gig is in gets robbed and vandalized, only to be saved by the same folks who come see you play.

Good that they got caught.  Extra-good that the music goes on.

Glad the damage was limited. Seeing Joe Diorio play there is one of my enduring memories of living in Los Angeles in the late seventies. Thank goodness some the touchstones of my misspent youth are still standing.
