Restarting Double bass lessons.
« on: January 16, 2024, 11:20:01 AM »
I had my first lesson this afternoon since the pandemic. I changed teacher only because this guy lives closer to me than my former teacher.
He loves my classico and thinks it sounds better than an amplified double bass which is a good thing.
Like the previous teacher he is one of the top players in my area.

I was in a terrible hurry earlier, and couldn't make a longer post at the moment, but I wanted to ask; were you able to sort out the issue with the action at the bridge? I have a set of those adjusters I can post you, if they would be helpful.

Well now that you ask, i did mean to drop you an email. Yes I did get my other half's brother in law. He has his own carpentry business and does a lot of high end custom work for restoring listed historical buildings amongst other things. Anyway I took the bass to his workshop just after Christmas and he took down the bridge spacers until it felt right to play. On my lesson this week I asked the teacher to let me know if the bass is set up ok and he said it was fine and about the same string height as his own bass. He did notice that the finger board is flatter than his DB and wonders if that is because it is not really set up for using a bow.

Looking forward to reports of your progress. I don't make room for a lot of regrets in life, but one thing I very much wish I had followed through with was upright bass lessons. I chanced to meet a great player and teacher through a mutual musical acquaintance, and in a very short time he showed me what I was missing, and what was possible if I unlearned some things that were holding me back. I have had many friends and mentors, but Bob Thomas (name is coincidence here...) was the one who had that rare ability to teach a hard-headed string-strangler like me. Unfortunately, Bob died rather suddenly in 2011, before I could realize that plan.
